I know for some positions you have to take a test. Like for a conductor, etc. My dad works for the NYC transit, he basically started from the ground up. It's all basically up to what kind of job you are looking for. Go to http://www.mta.info/lirr/jobpostings/

Hope this helps!!

Probably to start is around $30,000-$35,000 with pay increases after a few years. I do know they have great benefits, retirement etc. Good luck!

You start as an assistant conductor I thin karound $40-$50. After two years you have to qualify to become a conductor. With overtime, he makes about $100,000 a year. Without overtime I am sure it has to be around $70-$80k.

It is a union job. Also - the testing is so ridiculously hard - you really have to be dedicated. They have to know all the train parts, signals, etc.
