I understand tipping the Maitre'd but can you explain to me again how the waitstaff gets tipped. I remember Denise mentioning the gratuity included actually pays them and isnt their tip.
So how would I tip them and how much?

Most reception halls have thier own policy regarding tipping. Call your RH and get an answer from them

I would rely on your guests to tip their waiter. Maybe that sounds cheap but like I mentioned in that other thread, that's how it was done at the RH where I worked. Only the people the waiter was serving can judge their 'performance' and decide on an appropriate tip.

It's definitely different at each hall. Some halls say the gratuity tips the waitstaff, others will flat out tell you the gratuity doesn't cover anyone or anything and that it's basically a service charge. I haven't even asked my hall yet - I figured why get myself worked up until closer to my date!

Every wedding I attend we (the table) usually toss the waiter some cash. Like everyone at the table throws a couple bucks in the pot, then all together the waiter usually walks away with some well-deserved $$. Then again, that's just how my friends and I do it.

Re: not to sound stupid after recent drama but...
Most RHs dont tip the waitstaff, they just make their $8-$10/hr which comes out of the 18% gratuity.
If anything, my FH comes home with $10 at the week from tips the guest at his tables pooled together or from getting someone a drink.
Someone once asked him if he was Jewish and if he was Russian (he is both) so they gave him $5.
I dont think wait staff tips are customary so anything you gave them would be above and beyond.
Im not sure if other RHs do it differently so definitely check with them.

Really? I have never heard of this before. I just assumed that the 20% service charge was the tip. My hall said the only additional charges I would have would be the tip for the Maitre' D and the tip for the bridal attendant. I don't want my guest to have to tip anyone.

20% or for some of us who booked before it went up 18% service charge or gratuity charge depending on how your RH worded it goes towards the staff's salary not used as a tip...Also with that 18-20% it is going towards other services the hall provides for you...If you ask most ppl who worked at a catering hall they did not receive a tip from that 18-20%.
Usually they say to give the maitre'd about 2-4 per person. But you can give the waitstaff individually...For my e-party after it was over i went up to each server and gave them a tip, also the bartenders and valet ppl. As far as what to give them it differs, you will hear a bunch of different answers, i guess whatever youre comfortable with.

Re: not to sound stupid after recent drama but...
my brother worked for a big Catering Hall and he rarely recieved a tip unless it was from someone at table wanting him to get them drinks
My parents ALWAYS tip all the wait staff personally because of this. Its rare that the Maitre'd actaulyl splits his tip with the staff

I dont think that is fair, even though it is done!
most people at weddings dont think to tip the staff.. they assume that it is being covered by the host of the party. I never used to tip the wait staff until my brother started working at a catering ahll and told me what really happens.
my brother was lucky to leave with a 10-20 $ tip
