Not trying to stir up any more controversy....

Original post by matron

But out of curiosity, how many of women on this board feel it would be rewarding to be a SAHM? I'm wondering if I'm in the minority. Please don't start more controversy. I'm interested in stats only.

I constantly go back and forth on this issue. I feel lucky that I will have the choice...but don't get me wrong it is still a sacrafice...I contribute greatly financially and without my salary there would be a few cutbacks (I may have to give up my love of prada & LV bags)

I think I would love staying at home for about a year or two and then I would need more. I love all the perks of being successful in a career. I love meeting new people and interacting with others throughout the day. I love being creative and that feeling when a project has been completed before a deadline and below budget. I don't know if I could give those things up.

I think if I leave my career behind I will be jealous of my husband for all that he accomplishes and all that he does on a daily basis. My ideal situation I think is to work part time or become more of a consultant and work when I want.

If you think it could be rewarding, but not for YOU, then vote NO! This poll is how YOU feel, not others.

Hmm, I don't think I can answer. My mom was a SAHM. I KNOW it is rewarding. I think being a mom, working or staying at home, is rewarding.

I wont be a SAHM but I don't want to classify it as UN-rewarding. I think thats insulting to the SAHMs. And my decision not to be a SAHM has nothing to do with the rewards of motherhood and more to do with feel like a complete person for myself.

No vote - just my opinion for those who care about it

Most of us don't have kids ... this is just a poll about whether or not you THINK it would be rewarding. It would be interesting to see if anyone's perspectives changed once they gave birth too. Maybe I'll do that one on the parenting board.

I think mine will most likely chance once I have kids... after all, swore I would never get married & here I am.

Personally rewarding as in, there is nothing to compare it to....Yes, it would be worth it for me. I feel like no one can take better care of my kids. Would I need time to myself in the form of a P/T job or having DH watch the kids once in awhile...HELL yea.

I admire the women that CAN and WANT to work and raise kids..I don't think I could handle both...so I'm choosing one at a time.

I agree 120%.
My FH is all for me staying home and I will but once the little ones are in school, I will go back to work. That is the plan for now. Whether it will change....don't know.

My fiance came from a big family. 12 brothers and sisters. His mom never worked a day in her life but how could she. She is 100% against working mom's. My feeling is once they are in school and not home all day....what the heck am I gonna do with my time!!!

Do I think being a SAHM is rewarding...Absolutely!!!

For me it is a YES. But my birth experience was different than most moms so the emotional rewards outweigh the $$$.

I voted yes. But I am not sure it would be rewarding to me.

My mom worked full-time all through my childhood and still does. It gave me a strong sense of independence and self-sufficiency. If you can afford to stay home and raise your children, that is great! But, if you can't afford to or enjoy working, then there is nothing wrong with that either.

I hope that made sense.

I don't think anybody has done that on this board. This if just to get people's opinions.

In the other thread maybe, but I think people have been courteous in this one.

I agree with matron - this thread has been quite pleasant and interesting to read. I even thought the other was (even though there were a few fighting words in there but most people apologized for the fighting words) - even so it was just people having strong opinions on a topic they care deeply about! People post away - I find this thread interesting and I have no desire to work now!!

I think it definitely would be rewarding. I can't see how anyone could say it isn't. Maybe it's not AS rewarding to some as working also, or working full time, but I think it's definitely rewarding. Whether it's more rewarding than other options depends on the person. I always thought I could never be a SAHM. I thought it would make me crazy and that my career was more important or that money would always be an issue. But now that I'm older and closert og etting married and actualy having children I can't wait until I get to raise my children. I really do want to do some part time work or work from home, and let grandma watch the kids once in awhile, and once the kids are in school all day and into extra currics, I'll definitely want to go back to work. I'm really amazed at how much my own views have changed. I guess I grew up to appreciate my mom staying at home. And since I want to be a teacher, in a related way, I can't wait to teach my children so many things! All of my cousins are putting their kids in daycare after 2 mos (and then can afford to stay home, definitely). But I can't imagine that. I want to be the one who shapes who my children are and will become, I want to be there for first words and first steps. But I can totally understand how someone would not want to do that. I am torn about it too, I realize how much it's going to break my momentum in whatever career I choose. I just can't see how being a SAHM mom is wasing your talent. people tell me that becoming a teacher will be a waste of my brains, but who else do you want in charge of your kids, and especially teaching them, but a smart person. We've planned not to have kids for another 5-8 years at least, but I really can't wait to have them. I worked at Sears portrait Studio for a year (you ladies who ahve rbought kids there KNOW how crazy it is, especially at xmas). And some days I came home really wanting kid and other days I swore I'd never have them. RIght now, my maternal instinct is kicking into high gear, and I can't imagine anything more rewarding than shaping the life of a little human being
