Not trying to stir up any more controversy....

Not trying to stir up any more controversy....

But out of curiosity, how many of women on this board feel it would be rewarding to be a SAHM? I'm wondering if I'm in the minority. Please don't start more controversy. I'm interested in stats only.

I definately have to say that I think it would be one of the most rewarding jobs in the world!

I don't know if this was a good idea, I think there will be controversy!

ETA: I think if you are able to stay at home then of course it is rewarding!!!

okay, okay - truth be told I would love to be a SAHM - I am a mother of a 6 year old and not able financially to do this.

I hope so...it's such an important one.
If a person is not 'built' to be a SAHM, then it probably wouldn' be though. Just like the last thread, I think it depends entirely on the person. Being a SAHM is not for everyone.

I am not condemning either decision. I truly respect both and am sincerely wondering how the majority of women in our age group feel about this issue. I am really only interested in the stats. We already know what people's viewpoints are from the other board.

I am only interested in what YOU feel. Not what you think is good for anyone else but YOU.

I am not sure what I feel.... I am actually quite torn about it. If i did decide to do it, it would probably be P/t & I personally would find way to be invoolved in my child's life/activities and hopefully, that will be interesting.

Since I do not have kids, I don't honestly know how I will feel.

I responded Yes but I am really torn. I just had this conversation with someone the other day. Part of me says that I worked really hard to get where I am in my job that it would be hard to give that up. Another part of me says that once I take a look at my child, how could I possibly leave him during the day to go to work? I think working from home would be ideal and I could for at least 1 day during the week but I am just not sure if that is enough for me.
I guess I will just have to make that decision when the time comes.
When a girl I used to work with got pregnant, everyone was really surprised since she didn't seem like the 'mommy type'. After she had the baby, she decided to be a SAHM. Sometimes you just don't know!!

I'm not sure whether it's a question of being rewarding or not, meaning I feel it has to be rewarding whether or not you like doing it...I'm not sure if this makes sense.

Personally, I struggle with this issue. I will be able to stay home, financially. But, I love my job too much to want to stay away (I'm a high school teacher and not too fond of the little ones!!!). However, the reward will be knowing that I was there to raise my own kids even if it's a major sacrifice on my part.

Again, not too sure if this made any sense. Bottom line... I voted YES.

Re: Not trying to stir up any more controversy....

Ive been a SAHM for 25 months now. There are days that I truly miss being a productive working part of society, getting a paycheck, socializing with someone other than a 2 year old... BUT then I see all the things my child knows because of me. I see how she treats others and I know thats because of me. When she says Please and Thank You its because I am teaching her these things. I value the time we have together because she is only going to be little once. I am thankful that I have the ability to stay home and take her to swimming lessons, music classes etc. Im thankful that I dont have to worry about going to work and leaving her during the day and wondering what she is doing and what new skills she is mastering.

Now dont get me wrong, I dont get a lunch break or time to myself until DH gets home and he is usually tired from working all day so I have to guess when i am going to be able to leave them together to have some time alone. I am on call 24-7 which is HARD when I would give anything to sleep in on a weekend.

Now as there are positives and negatives to this situation I wouldn't give it up for anything. Im even adding another kid to the mix cause Im insane... It isnt rewarding in the sense that you get a boss telling you you did a good job heres more $$ but you get kisses and hugs from your child, you get to see your future grow before your eyes doing things and behaving in a way that you taught... I am helping shape the future of the world and to me nothing is more rewarding.

This poll is anonymous ... I really want to get a feel for everyone's opinions ... not just those who feel it is rewarding ... so for those of you that don't, please vote too. I'm so curious...

I replied YES because for me, I think it would be very rewarding. I'm a lawyer who likes her job and worked hard for it, but if I could swing it financially (I can't), I'd quit in a heartbeat. That's just me.

However, why is it a choice between 'let someone else raise your child' vs. 'seeing your child grow up and being a part of it?' I don't see it that way at all. Even though I'll be leaving the house at 7am and getting home at 7pm, I'll be spending every single night, and every single weekend, with my child. I plan on doing a lot with my children on weekends, reading to them at night, playing with them, teaching them things, etc. Sure, it will be more difficult and mean less free time for me, but it's no more difficult than when only the husband works and sees the child for the same periods of time. Are we saying that husbands who are the sole breadwinners don't have any role in raising their children? Of course not.

Just my 2 cents.

Same here. Right now my gut is that no, I don't want the be a stay at home mom. The young, independent, 'modern woman' side of me screams out at the idea of my identity solely being wrapped up in being so-and-so's mom. But at the same time, I know that things might completely change when I have kids so until that point, I don't really know.

Since I totally think a being a SAHM would be a rewarding experience, I voted yes. But for me I can't see that being my only experience -if that makes sense. Knowing how I am, I would know I would want more to my life and regret giving up things that I have done in my career and my DH even sees that in me and understands that. But I am not a mommy and my views may be subject to change but at this time this is how I feel.

Most of us don't have kids ... this is just a poll about whether or not you THINK it would be rewarding. It would be interesting to see if anyone's perspectives changed once they gave birth too. Maybe I'll do that one on the parenting board.

I said yes, but it depends on the individual.

HOwever I can't imagine no greater pleasure or reward of being home to raise your own children.

BTW, I'm sure we all realize this but being a SAHM *is* a full time job in itself!

Personally rewarding as in, there is nothing to compare it to....Yes, it would be worth it for me. I feel like no one can take better care of my kids. Would I need time to myself in the form of a P/T job or having DH watch the kids once in awhile...HELL yea.

I admire the women that CAN and WANT to work and raise kids..I don't think I could handle both...so I'm choosing one at a time.
