I took a job bartending at a new resturant in Midtown 3 1/2 weeks ago. I put in 30hrs. of training plus meetings and even spent last Sunday setting up the bar from 3pm- 8:30pm for which I was paid NOTHING!!!! So, finally we opened last Monday(with no soda guns behind the bar....smart). My schedule is Mon PM, Sat AM and Sun PM. That schedule just blows. I worked 3 shifts and made $100. The Manager said that he was going to change up the schedule this week to see different people at different times and how they work. Well, last night I walk in and my schedule is exactly the same!!!! The good shifts are going to people that work at other resturants in the same companyand who were surprisingly absent the Sunday we had to set up the bar. I am a really good bartender and worker. I am so pi$$ed. I feel like I have been used for free labor then stuck into the worst possible shifts. I mean I left work on Saturday with $20 after a 7 hr. shift. This does not pay my bills. I think tonight I am going to sit the manager down and have a talk about this situation. I understand that money is money, but $20 is a waste of my time. I can work at McDonald's and make more.

We could have our next NYC g2g on one of your shifts!
I hope you and your boss are able to work out something better for you.

I'm sorry! I hope talking to your manager works. And if it doesn't, shoot him with a soda gun until you feel better!

that stinks That always happnned to me when I woked retail. I'd get teh slow shifts & then --surprise--it woudo be slow , and they's send me home, shoretnign my measiny 6 hour shift to a 2 hour shift.
Maybe they just need to get more organized , or see that you are definitley worth a Friday or Saturday night!

Definitely have a talk with the manager ... at this point, what have you got to lose?
Keep your chin up!

Damn, that ***** I know how you were struggling to make a decision in terms of jobs. You definitely need to talk to your manager and tell him how you feel.

That really stinks...have a talk with the manager you don't deserve to be treated like that! You are being taken advantage of. Are you the only female??

You are not going to like this... but this is common bar practice. You are never going to get the good shifts right away. You are low man on the totem pole and will have to work your way up the senority ladder.
There may be opportunities where people will need off on an occasional weekend night. Happens in my bar all the time.

do you still have some shifts at the old job or did you quit fully?
