I was all set to quit my horrible job in NYC because I couldn't bare the principal...
So I get a call tonight from a lady that I work with who is having major problems with the principal as well...she wanted to know if I had found anything and I said no...and I told her of my plan to quit and she was like...you can't do that, you don't want to have that gap on your resume and you are getting married and most of all that I will show the principal that she really got to me...
honestly I know that she means well and was really trying to be helpful BUT I cannot bare to go back to that place...I was sooo depressed being there and I think that I was developing an ulcer at the end of the school year...I can't endure another year

Re: Now I don't know what to do
Did you try lookin for TA or permanent sub jobs? The pay is crappy but it definitely gets your foot in the door and if you can afford the shi**y pay for one school year it will probably be worth your while.
Honestly, who cares if your principal knows that she got to you...your health and sanity are MUCH more important! Godd luck!

you have to do what's best for you. Who cares what the principal thinks...don't even waste your time thinking her! What were you planing on doing if nothing else comes up?

Subbing and also I know that the camp I work for has a program during the year so I was going to see if I could do that after school

That might be your best bet for now. you won't have a gap on your resume and you'll have some piece of mind. Will you get benefits though? that's another extra expense. Its a really tough decision.

I say quit, who cares what the principal thinks. she's probably a wacko anyway. She was trying to help but everyone is unique, and the gap isn't going to look too bad. Believe me, I don't know about the teaching industry, but I hire people and look at resumes all the time and I don't pay attention to gaps. I look at education, and work experience the most.

I had a horrible year this year too. It's not the kids but the staff. They are so miserable that they want you to sulk with them and if you don't then they hate you for it. If I have another bad year, I'm going to leave! I didn't make the effort for this year coming up because of my wedding plans. Good luck and I am sure that you will make the right choice! Everything in life happens for a reason!

Well if I do that...no benefits Another option to weigh ...if I did the subbing thing I may also go back to school to start another certification...
I am so depressed..I feel so lost

Its just that education especially elem ed is so competitive and I know that people do look at gaps in employment....BUT if I stay at this job this principal will be gunning for me and probably looking for a reason to fire me..she basically told me at the end of this year that she will be out for me next year if I come back...really makes me want to go back there right?

Re: Now I don't know what to do
I would definitely leave that job. As someone who HATES their job with a passion, I really think it is unhealthy. I find myself getting depressed and moody, and each night I hate going to sleep cause I know I have to wake up in the AM to go to work It can really take a toll on one's mental health as well as my life OUTSIDE my job. Unfortunately, FH and I are in the process of buying a home, so I am stuck until the mortgage goes through and we close. After that I am SO out of here (hopefully I can find something with similar $$$)
About five of my bestest friends are teachers and all but one started as a TA or permanent sub two years ago, and this past year they all had full time teacher jobs. So even though you will be taking a break from teaching, you will still be doing similar work and working with kids - so I think you'll be ok. Good luck either way Hopefully karma will get that nasty principle in the end

Re: Now I don't know what to do
I work on LI and it took me years to find a job. Yes the field is so competitive, as you know. Just an FYI..I work with someone who quit their job in the city as a teacher cause she did not get along with her principal. Well, she has since been blacklisted cause she quit. You can't really explain why you left your job, cause of the principal..it looks really bad. Sorry, I know your health is important but I remember looking for work for so long and I am finally so happy I found a home. Good luck and try and stick it out, unless something else comes along. I remember thinking I would do anything for a teaching job..it is tough out there so unless you honestly can't bear it stick it out and keep to yourself. Good Luck!

Re: Now I don't know what to do
Personally, I would not stay there. Anything that makes you that miserable is not worth it. You could always say you left to go back to school, I did that and no one questioned me, I had a year gap between teaching jobs. I hated teaching all together, did it for three years and will never go back, no matter what. I did that after quitting the first teaching job and taking the year off, I convinced myself teaching wasn't so bad, it was just the district I was in and the principal hated me (he once yelled at me in front of one of my classes!!). The next district was just as bad, and I got along fine with everyone, but I still hated it. Anyway, no I am no longer teaching and am soo much happier. It took me a few months to find a job, but its totally worth it. Is there anything else you think you would like to do besides teaching?

Re: Now I don't know what to do
Kath,....I know you arent happy and that is the most important right now. You end up resenting your job and if you continue there, you may end up not enjoying your postion as a teacher. I know I mentioned this before, but my sister is a teacher here in Bethpage. I know they get the heads up on whos looking. Let me know what grade u teach and maybe we can eliminate you going back to that school! I'll pass the word.
Dont let someone also tell u what to do, even if you feel she is looking out for your best interest. Taking time off is not going to ruin your resume and you do have a wedding to prepare for. Im crossing my fingers for you that something comes up and you dont have to return to a miserable job!

Kathleen,
No job in the world is more important than your health or well-being. I can understand how stressful your job can be, so If you feel that the best thing for you to do is leave, then leave. Dont let one person influence your decision. Remember its YOUR life. Who cares if you have a gap on your resume? Can you honestly believe that something written on a piece of paper is worth getting sick over? Absolutely not. Listen, you need to do whats best for you.. not anyone else. You have to please yourself & the people you love the most. Always remember that your boss will always find a replacement for you just as fast as you can find a replacement for them. I would continue looking for a different job. Frig everyone else. Trust me.. there is someone out there who would love to hire you. It may take time to find them, but an opportunity will come for you. Frig your principal. do whats best for YOU!

I agree with everyone who said that your health is most important. If you are not happy, then your health will suffer. You have to do what is best for you. I will keep my fingers crossed that you find something soon.

Well I would never tell another principal that I left due to problems with the principal....I am going to use the excuse that it was too far of a commute which is true..and I honestly cannot stick it out..this woman basically told me the last week of school...if you come back...your life will be miserable

Re: Now I don't know what to do
Can you ask to be transfered to another school? See if there are openings, and then tell your principal that you want to experience a diffrent grade.
