Nursery Furniture...Moms opinions needed

I purchased the crib, and I got a good one. Things like cribs, strollers, mattresses, I think you cant skimp on cuz the quality is important, for safety reasons.
New moms/moms to be, did you go out and buy the whole nursery set, or are you just getting a few pieces/dresser, etc.
Now the furniture for nurseries is sooo overpriced!
($800 for a dresser and $500 for a hutch!)
Its back to the old game of marketing. We ALL went through this when wedding planning !
I wanted to get a few dressers from IKEA to match the crib, and when the kid is older (6-8?) he/she can pick out their own 'bedroom set'... Is anyone else doing this ? Whats your opinions ?
I also thought about the changing table, and Im getting a 3 drawer dresser instead and will hook the changing pad on to it (they come with a belt-type strap that hooks on to any dresser) instead of getting a reg chg table where all your things are right there out in the open (no closed drawers), i'll have 3 drawers with all that storage space and 'out of sight, out of mind'.
What other options do I have for affordable furniture pieces ? any stores anyone can think of?

Thanks!

Re: Nursery Furniture...Moms opinions needed

Hi Anna ... When I purcharsed my son's furniture I was thinking the same thing.'Let me get some of it now and the rest when He is older so I can change the room' But then I thought more... I had the same furniture all my life as a kid(thank goodness it wasn't juvinelle!!) but it wasn't 'nice' it was something to make do till later. But that later never came. So I went out and bought a beautiful 5 draw dresser, armoir and hutch with draws-that like you said had the changing table where you can put a pad and use as shelf later. His room is primary colors and sports. I figured he has great furniture now that he can use through his child and teenage years so I do not have to change it before he goes to college. (I know this is getting ahead of the game but something to think of). But if there is a set you like and do not need all the pieces right now get the good stuff now piece by piece for when you need it.
I went to BEHRS in Hicksville-they had beautiful stuff and reasonable.
Good Luck and fun with this too!!! Keep me posted on what you decide (Hope this helped a little)

Re: Nursery Furniture...Moms opinions needed

Anna-

That's exactly what we did. I bought a really nice crib at BRU (a great deal by the way-floor model in perfect condition, originally $399, got it for $175!!) and a really good mattress. I also couldn't see spending what they wanted for brand new furniture, which we don't even currently have the room for. I didn't have the energy to go to yard sales or answer ads for used furniture and I didn't think I wanted a changing table which in a few years becomes an obsolete piece of furniture. So we purchased a chest of drawers and double dresser at IKEA in light wood that matches the crib. I am using the top of the double dresser as the changing area. I gor the foam changing pads that you can bolt onto the back of the dresser. It looks really cute and they dressers are nice enough to use elsewhere in the house when the time comes. My husband laughs because he said the baby has 12 drawers and he only has half an armoire! (He's exagerating, he has 3/4 of the armoire and 3 other drawers) His friend who already has 2 kids told him to get use to it. I'm very happy with the decision.
