NWF: FFIL is having surgery... UPDATE 4/18/08 on bottom

He woke up!

We just found out today that FH's dad needs either a triple or quadruple bypass. He went for an angiogram this morning. I had a feeling that he would need surgery. We're not sure when the surgery is scheduled for... definitely sometime this week. Please keep him and my FIL's and of course FH in your thoughts! I would truly appreciate it!

We just got back from the hospital (Winthrop). FMIL and FFIL were talking to the Doctor when we got there so we waited until he left to go in. It's a triple bypass scheduled for Friday. I feel so bad for him. He's usually this tough Italian guy and he was trying so hard not to cry but he was, especially when he found out FSIL was flying in from FL tonight. Then other FSIL came in and she was crying so FFIL and FMIL were crying which made me all teary. But... prognosis so far is great. He's just nervous more than anything. One funny, yet gross thing that happened... his roomie on the other side of the curtain was puking his guts out for nearly 5 minutes straight.... it was so gross but what was funny was that FFIL was eating his dinner and was like, how the hell can I eat this now! Anyhoo... keep those good thoughts coming! I'll update again after surgery...

Some good news. . . my Fh's grandfather had a triple bypass about 20 years before he passed and his heart was not the reason for his demise, it was still healthy and ticking well up until the very end.

My father had triple bypass a few years ago and it was fine. I know that it is always scary when its a family member, but they do these surgies so often now-a-days! He will be fine!!! ::hugs::

Just got word he's in surgery now

Just got home from the hospital. He went in for the surgery at about 12. We got a few updates every couple of hours or so. At 5 or 5:30, we got word to go upstairs to see the doctor. At around 6, the doctor came out and told us that the surgery went very well, his heart looks excellent, etc. However, they were having problems stopping the bleeding. FFIL is on a variety of meds and vitamins, one of which is Fish Oil/Omega 3, a blood thinner. The surgeon said that this vitamin is the reason why the blood wasn't clotting. If the bleeding didn't stop or slow down in a couple of hours, they would have to open him back up to make sure the heart wasn't bleeding and then to find the source of the bleeding and stitch it up. Then he said something that disturbed me and FH as well. The surgeon said that if he had known that FFIL was taking the fish oil, he would have delayed the surgery a few days. Now, FFIL had to submit a list of his meds and vitamins to the surgeon and on it was the fish oil but the brand name of it. The surgeon then says, he didn't know what the brand name was, didn't ask FFIL or FMIL what it was, and did the surgery anyway FH and I think that if he didn't know what kind of vitamin or med the brand name was, he should have asked before doing the surgery!!

Anyway, FMIL, FSILs, and FH went in to go see FFIL. FH and I then went to pick up some dinner for everyone. We went upstairs to the ICU waiting room and ate and we got word that the bleeding had gone from 400cc's to under 50cc's At 8:30, visiting hours began again and we took turns going in to see him. He was a bit puffy, yellow from the iodine, and still unconcious but otherwise everything looks fine! As we were leaving, we heard that his eyes were starting to flutter open and he was slowly starting to come around. That's all I know for now but it's looking good. Sorry to hear that he has to go through surgery. But, he has alot of support from you guys and everything will work out fine.
