NWR: 9/11

NWR: 9/11

Watching the news right now and they're showing a video about 9/11. Amazing how 10yrs have gone by and I can't help but get choked up every time I see the burning towers.

I can still clearly remember where I was when I heard the towers were hit. It was my freshman year of college and I was at the start of my second week of school. I literally walked out of my morning class when I heard the news and couldn't believe it. I tried calling my parents and when my Nextel didn't work, I threw it across the quad (figuring it was just being typical Nextel). I walked to my dorm which was on a hill and went on the roof with my roommates and saw the smoke pouring out of the Manhattan skyline.

Where were you?

It's so eerie and crazy that it's been ten years. I still carry really strong emotions from that day, even though I (thankfully) did not lose anyone personally...

I was in high school English class. Someone heard about the first tower. The teacher turned on the TV and we saw the second tower get hit. I didn't fully understand what was happening... once I did, I wanted to go home and they wouldn't let anyone leave. I don't think I tore my eyes off the television after that for I don't even know how long.

On a really disrespectful and frustrating note, I was invited to a bridal shower, in Westchester, this 9/11. Besides logistical reasons (trying to get to Westchester from LI on that day?!?!?! no thank you), I find it in kind of poor taste for a NYer to plan a celebration on the tenth memorial of such a tragedy for our nation and NYers especially. I will be sending a gift.....

Wow- I can't believe it's been 10 yrs already!

I was in 11th grade- my brother was a NYC police officer, so that made me panic. We actually didn't hear from him much for like 2 weeks because he was called in and would literally work, sleep 2 hours, and go back to work.

My heart goes out to anyone who lost a loved one

i was right there with you at good ole' MC. I remember my sociology teacher said that a helicopter crashed... then we went out to the quad and heard the real news. We immediately went to the roof of Jasper and watched it all happen.. it was such a CLEAR day that you could literally see all the way downtown... it was pretty insane. I'll never forget that day, nor the amount of love I felt around me at MC

I was in the car and heard it on the Howard Stern show.. I thought it was a joke, but then realized it wasn't I actually had the day off, and I remember how beautiful of a day it was (weather-wise). I ended up glued to the TV w/ my mom watching the devastation (sp?) ...... We watched the 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower and it still gives me shivers thinking about it. I can't believe it's been 10 yrs. My thoughts and prayers are with those who lost loved ones on that day.

I literally remember driving to school and thinking that it was an amazingly beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky.
It was my 2nd year of college and I was in economics class. Someone's phone went off and the prof joked that it better be his stock broker calling, the kid mentioned that the market was closed since a small a plane flew into the building. A few minutes later security came in to tell us school was cancelled. Phones were out, my dad was in the city, my mom was working here on SI. I ran home, my bf got me and we went to pick my brother up from HS. Then I spent the day at a friends house since some friends were stranded here in SI since the bridge was closed.

It was horrible. Many many for those that lost loved ones

Crazy. I was a sophomore in college...I was in Indiana and has just woken up for my 9 AM class (we were an hour behind), and the planes had hit. I was walking to the shower and my friend called me in to her room to tell me (she was from Queens), and as we were watching the first tower fell. I just remember standing there in my bath robe with my hand over my mouth.

And I couldn't get in touch with anyone from home...it ****** being away.

DH was a student at Maryland at the time, and they climbed to the top of their football stadium and could see the smoke rising from the Pentagon.

Re: NWR: 9/11

Its hard to believe that it has been 10 years.

I probably have a different story that most of you girls, I actually wasn't not in New York and at the time I had no connection in New York, nor did I ever think I would.

I was only a couple weeks into my senior year of high school and I remember going to school and I hadn't heard anything about it becuase I was running late so I didn't watch TV or listen to the radio. When I got to school that is what everyone was talking about. We didn't do anything in school that day just sat and watched tv and prayed for the United States of America, but more importantly for the friends and family effected in New York......

I have had people tell me that 9/11 didnt have any effect on me since I was not from New York, but I want to reassure anyone that was directly affected by this, that I can promise you you had all the thoughts and prayers of the people from all across the USA that day, and if you had any part in helping with the recovery, clean up or just being a citizen that stepped up in the time of need.......THANK YOU!!!

GOD BLESS THE USA!

Re: NWR: 9/11

I was in my Junior year at CW Post getting ready for class when my friend across the hall came pounding on my door and told me to turn on the TV. The minute I turned it on we both saw the 2nd plane hit, my first reaction was 'is this a joke'. We were on lockdown for the rest of the day/night at CW Post, we were glued to the TV, couldn't get in touch with anyone via phone it was the scariest day of my life. I remember walking outside and walking down towards 25A, you could see the smoke, smog in the distance towards the city and NO ONE was on the roads, you would just see emergency services, firetrucks, ambulances, etc speed by going west towards the city. I get chills and choked up just thinking about it again, it's so vivid even though it's 10 years later. I personally did not lose anyone that day but so many people close to me lost someone they loved and it's a day I will never, ever forget.

God Bless NY & the USA...

The worst part is that you could hear the sirens echoing throughout the city. Such a scary day but I definitely believe it caused many of us to get close very quickly.

Off topic but my sister's a Jr. at MC now and every time I go pick her up, it makes me realize how much I miss being there and how much fun I had during those 4years. Wish I could go back.

Re: NWR: 9/11

I don't think any of us will ever forget exactly where we were that day when we heard the news

I had a late schedule at St Johns so I was still in bed sleeping when my mom called me in a panic saying the terrorists were attacking....I was like yeah, ok mom and thought she was just being paranoid as usual. I went down to turn on the TV and watched the second plane hit live. That was such an emotional moment, one that I relive everytime I think of 9/11.

Re: NWR: 9/11

I'm fighting back tears reading all of these and remembering that day. I had recently won tickets to Toronto from Z100 and was supposed to leave Sept 12, 2001. My parents were in San Fran, CA and I didn't have a passport at the time. My birth certificate was in the safe deposit box and I did not have access to it. On Sept 10 when I spoke to my dad I told him that I was going to try the union hall first thing in the morning and then try the city to the birth cerificate office which is about 3-4 blocks from the Trade Center, and my friend was coming with me (I had a 1:30 class - first year of college).

On Sept 11th, I woke up, went to my friend's house and as we were about to leave her neighbor knocked on the door 'a place just hit the trade center'. We turned the TV on and the second tower got hit. We turned it off and I don't know why we didn't think it was something that we needed to sit in front of the tv for but we left. On the LIE you could see the smoke coming from the city, traffic was everywhere, and fire trucks, police, etc were trying to make their was through the traffic. We turned on the radio and heard what had happened and what was going on (the towers falling and a terroist attack). The union hall had no idea what was going on. We knew right then and there that we needed to go to my house and turn the tv back on (no way I was going to the city). We went back home, my friend thought her dad was in one of the planes so she went back to her moms. I was interning at WLIR and was called into work for some press releases and news tracking. I left there FINALLY, picked up my little sister from HS (no one was allowed to go home without someone picking them up), and we sat.

About 5PM my dad FINALLY got in touch with me. he thought I was in the city not far from the trade center.

Our union lost 17 guys that day and 10 years later I am glad to see brothers and sisters replacing those fallen pieces!
