NWR A Dog question?

NWR A Dog question?

I know alot of you are dog lovers. I am too but my maltese died last summer. My mom had him in her house since I moved in with FH. We are moving after the wedding to Monroe, NY that's Upstate. I was thinking since. The house is big and my almost 2 year old and I will be alone sometimes. I'd like to hear some barking. Upstate is very wooded in some areas. Where will be is not really woodsy. But I like small dogs Yorkies, Maltese. My malty was no good around children especially babies. I don't want a dog that will snap at my daughter. Should I even bother with a dog? If so what breed of dog is good around children?

I think Labradors are excellent with kids

If you want a little dog why not consider a Jack Russel, mini schnauzer, or something like a cairn, norwich or norfolk terrier. Hope this gives you a starting place. These are all very nice small family dogs that will still show some home defense.

I had wanted a maltese for years...but once I researched, I realized that would have been a mistake. I ended up with a shihtzu. He is great with kids, and super mushy. They are wonderful dogs and still very cute. He really never barks. They are super affectionate. Please consider them, I will never get another breed because of my amazing ewxperience with mine little guy!

I have a Shih Tzu also and they are the most lovable and affectionate small breed dog! I don't think I would get any other breed now that I have my puppy for almost two years. I am going to stick with Shih-zu's!

I have a Yorkie and he is the love of my life (except for DH of course). He is very needy though. I have also read that Yorkies are not good with children, although my dog doesn't have a mean bone in his body and loves everyone to death. Dogs are like people - all different, and you can really only stereotype a breed to a certain degree.

Good luck with your decision. Just make sure you have lots of time and patience when you get a puppy - they take up a lot of your time..just like children.

I think most big dogs are really good around children.....labs, golden retrivers...etc. I do have a pomerian who is excellent around kids. I also have a beagle, who is good. My yorkie is miserable around kids......i love her to death but i can't even bring her around kids at all.

I have a french bull dog, shes AMAZING with kids, all of the kids from the neighborhood come over to play with her, shes awesome with my niece (6 months) and my nephew (11) Shes also a great watch dog, you cant even hiccup in my front yard without her barking...granted shes always a little noisy, she snorts when she breathes, but shes small, and adorable, and really wonderful with children

I love my shitzu and he is a mush ...he loves to play HOWEVER he sometimes thinks that when playing it is ok to nibble....he does not mean any harm and thinks he is playing but sometimes children (my cousins get a bit nervous) they are young and dont know that he is just playing

love him though ..!

Did you do a search online?

They have those 'what is the best dog for me' type of websites.

You answer questions about kids, lifestyle, time you have for the dog, allergies, etc.

Where are you moving in Monrow County - that's where I grew up!!

As for dogs, yorkies love people. My FH grew up with two and all the pictures have them curled up in their laps and one is still around today. They bought a new puppy last year and he loves chasing after toys and licking us! They're a little pricey, but well worth the price.

I have two labs and they are great!! They can be a bit clumsy but they are amazing with kids and they will bark at strangers (then they will kiss them to death, but at least they bark ). They are big so if you are set on a small dog stay away. My parents have a poodle who can get a little snippy (he snipped at my 2yo niece when she was harassing him. My brother has a jack russell who also can get moody and he also snipped at my niece recently. Definately do some research into a breed before you decide on one. There is a dog for every lifestyle!!

Try doing some internet research...there are websites that give you a little quiz and then recommend the best breeds for you.

Good luck!

If you want a smart dog great with children and protective, i would def go with a german shep, or maybe a mix shep/lab.
My family has a mix shep/lab and she is the best dog. SOOOOO smart (its scary sometimes), and loyal like you wouldn't believe.
I would def recommend going to North Shore Animal League...that is where we got both my dogs. They have so many wonderful animals and they pay for everything...I think you only pay $40 (which covers the cost of the spaying or nuetering), and you make a donation of whatever amount you want.

Nicole, prices have gone up since then!!

FSIL adopted two dogs last year - I belive it was $250 for each of them but you get $50 back when you take them to get fixed.
