I know alot of you are dog lovers. I am too but my maltese died last summer. My mom had him in her house since I moved in with FH. We are moving after the wedding to Monroe, NY that's Upstate. I was thinking since. The house is big and my almost 2 year old and I will be alone sometimes. I'd like to hear some barking. Upstate is very wooded in some areas. Where will be is not really woodsy. But I like small dogs Yorkies, Maltese. My malty was no good around children especially babies. I don't want a dog that will snap at my daughter. Should I even bother with a dog? If so what breed of dog is good around children?

If you want a little dog why not consider a Jack Russel, mini schnauzer, or something like a cairn, norwich or norfolk terrier. Hope this gives you a starting place. These are all very nice small family dogs that will still show some home defense.
I agree- I am actually dog sitting my sister's mini schnauzer right now and she is sooo good!! She just the right amount of playful without being hyper. I briught her over to my mom's yesterday and she played so great with my 4 year old nephew. She was so gentle and ran around with him all over the yard. She is sooo smart too- she was house trained in less than a week and she is 4 months now. My sis got her at 3 months for $500. Here is a pic- She is 6 pounds and will probably get to 10-12 pounds because she is a mini
I had wanted a maltese for years...but once I researched, I realized that would have been a mistake. I ended up with a shihtzu. He is great with kids, and super mushy. They are wonderful dogs and still very cute. He really never barks. They are super affectionate. Please consider them, I will never get another breed because of my amazing ewxperience with mine little guy!
Plus-they dont shed!!
I like Labs. and Golden Retrievers...I would say they are in the middle-large in size. But not nearly as big as some dogs!

Re: NWR A Dog question?
i love labs and any dogs.. but for kids - you have to meet the parents of the dog to see what kinds of crazy dog you might get (read marley and me)..
i have a border collie - !!!!! any sport dog might be a little to rambunctious for small kids..
king charles spaniels are cute, small, and smart..
