totally nwr - but i am extremely nervous. i went for my routine gyno check up about a month ago and she called me saying that my pap was abnormal. i'm going back tonight for another test. i've never had an abnormal pap and i'm freaking out. i'm thinking the worse - like cancer. my friend said i'm not in the age range for cancer but i've never had an abnormal pap before.
anyone think i'm overreacting? i'm just so nervous.

I had an abnormal pap so they ran a test for HPV which came out negative - they said I had nothing to worry about.

I think you should try to relax. I think they do another pap to see if it is still abnormal and then take things from there. I had one abnormal once and when they had me come back it was fine. Could be nothing, so please don't upset yourself until you find everything out.

I have had so many abnormal paps!!! Do not get nervous, not saying that is easy, but it is probably nothing.
Did they say what it looked like and what stage the Pap came back as? It is usually a #
Sometimes your hormones can get a little messed up and the Pap can come back or it might be some abnormal cells that just need to be scrapped or freezed which is a very simple 10 min. in office procedure.

This happened to me when I was 18. It came back abnormal more than once. I had the abnormal cells frozen. Since then, 11 years, every pap has come out normal. It is nothing to get too upset about yet, let them retest. Many factors can contribute to an abnormal pap.

Like I said, I am sure it is nothing and if it is an infection, it can be treated. Things like this, if you leave it and ignore it for 10+ years, it can MAYBE turn into something, but that is why going for reg. check up's is so important. I am sure it is nothing Go and just ask as many questions as you want. my first one came back abnormal when I was 17 and I had a couple more after that, in the last 8 years, they have all been fine and I am 31 now. it's more common then people think for Paps to come back.
I am sure you are nervous, when I got that call my heart dropped also.

there are many many factors that can lead to an abnormal pap. I had one last year and they did HPV test (like someone else mentioned) and that came back with no issue. As a precaution, my doctor wants me to come in for a pap every six months for the next two years instead of once a year. So far, there have been no other issues. She said there are a lot of things that can throw it off...end/beginning of period, yeast infection, etc. No worries, you'll be okay!!!
ETA: When I found out about mine, I totally freaked too and thought the worst....so don't think you are crazy or anything!

I had an infection once that made the pap come back abnormal, I took antibotics and it cleared up on it's own.

I would totally not worry about it - it could be tons of things - esp. something stupid like a false positive. I freaked out when I got that dreaded call too - but it ended up being nothing at all.

I just went to the same thing about 1 month ago. I had never had an abnormal one either. I totally freaked out. I could not sleep They had told me they had to check for cancer. Of course, 2 months before the wedding and we were talking about a HM baby.... that was not 'IN THE PLAN'.
Anyway, I know it's easier said than done, but do not panic....although I did not tell anyone but a couple of people. I was so distraught.
They will do another test. Maybe a colposcopy to see if you have any abnormal cells. They may also do a biopsy ( they did for me!). Then you wait some more...
Since the biopsy came back negative for cancer, I still have to go after 3 months to make sure nothing changed.

I've had several abnormal Paps. When it's the first it can be really frightening, but I'm sure you will be fine. They will just retest and take things from there. There are soooooo many things that cause it to come back abnormal.

My Mom and best friend always have abnormal paps. For them it's nothing. I hope that it's nothing for you too Just try and stay positive till you know anything for sure, I know that's easier said than done. But here are some hugs for you

I had one a few years ago and they did the colposcopy which came back negative. I had a few more abnormal ones so I was going every 3 months but since then they have been normal every time. Good luck, it's much more common then you think so try not to worry too much.

It happens all the time - I had that happen a lot - 1st of all - its very common. lets say it is cervical cancer - which it is NOT - it is the easiest cancer to detect and treat - i have known many women who had cervical cancer, and its literally nothing - gyno can scrape the cancerous cells off, and then your fine!
I had some cells that looked too abnormal for my gyno's liking, had a minor procedure, and then I was totally fine!
