NWR: Advice on where to move
My FH and I are looking to buy a home within the next year. We want to be no more than a 40 minute train ride to Penn Station. And, within 20 minutes of Long Beach (my mom will be watching our future kids and that's where she lives). Any suggestions of towns we should look into??? I want to broaden our search and I feel like I dont know anything about any LI towns other than the ones directly surrounding Long Beach (Island Park, Oceanside, RVC, Lynbrook). Thanks!!

Re: NWR: Advice on where to move
Here are some suggestions to look into. There are my top suggestions for the commute you are looking for.
All three areas are very family orientated, good schools and are safe. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, cvs, riteaids, banks, etc etc.
My advice would also be to take a drive around the areas during the weekend. See how you like the areas.
All these areas you will be in Penn Station between 25-32 mins. It's actually faster than the MTA from Brooklyn!!
I moved in with my DH in New Hyde Park. I really like it here. My biggest thing is all these areas have sidewalks. So you can take a stroll and walk. During the summer, they have fairs in the street. The volunteer fire fighters have comedy shows in the winter which are really fun.
Floral Park and New Hyde Park are really close to the LIRR so the commute is easier. Floral Park an area with such pretty tudor houses. (if you like that style).
New Hyde Park is VERY big, runs from Covert Ave down to LIJ. Good school district, close to everything.
Franklin Square is so nice but then you need to drive to floral park or new hyde park to get to the LIRR (5 min drive, not far). But the area is very family orientated and seems like everyone is very friendly.
Stewart Manor is BEAUTIFUL. The town is so small so everyone knows one another. They have a strip of stores, nail and hair salons, markets and the houses are beautiful.
Let me know if you have any questions about these areas.

Re: NWR: Advice on where to move
I was born, raised, and sill live in Garden City. I love it! The schools are great and everything you need is so close! I commute to Penn every day- Garden City has a train station with about 2 trains an hour, but almost everyone I know in Garden City (icluding myself) drives to the Mineola train station, which can has about 5 trains an hour during rush hour! The ride from there to Penn is 32-36 minutes depending on how many stops the train is making. The downfall is that the homes can be on the expensive side.

I live in Stewart Manor and I completely agree with any of those surrounding areas! Floral Park, NHP and Stewart Manor all have their own towns with everything, including a few bars if you need some night life! There are different apartment complexes on Tulip Avenue that a friend of mine lived in and it was really nice, if you're not looking for a house right away. It is also less than a block from the Floral Park train station.
I wanted to live in RVC since I was young because most of my family lives there, but I've really come to love and appreciate this area so much more and I'm hoping to be able to stay here when we get a house. However, I do have four different friends - three couples and one single, that live in the co-ops of RVC and they are all brand new, beautiful and a short walk to the train!
Good luck!!!

mineola has gone downhill, IMO (i lived there when i was like 12). i would lean more towards garden city (but it's also more expensive!) middle school was safe but then we moved & im not sure high school was safe from rumors i heard.my cousins live in wantagh & levittown and that seems like a great area. they went to catholic school but i think only because of the sports?

Re: NWR: Advice on where to move
This is really helpful! I grew up in Suffolk but now live in BK with FH. I know once we start a family we need to be close to NYC for work, but I can't stand the thought of commuting to Ronkonkoma! It's good to see there's great suburban towns in LI with a short commute time.

we live in mineola and love it. but we're closer to the east williston school district. definitely an expensive area - we wish we could afford a place of our own here. we're trying to buy in southern nassau (wantagh, merrick, bellmore, seaford) - but it seems alot of these areas are so expensive.my only other complaint is that the area is very congested with shoppers who dont know how to drive...other than that. very convenient!

Merrick is a nice area. Also try Baldwin. I grew up in Williston Park and loved the Mineola area, but it's still a bit of a trek to Long Beach from there if you want to be within 20 minutes of there.

I'm originally from Merrick and hoping to move back one day. The train ride is about 45 minutes and runs pretty often. Merrick is also great because you have exits for both the Meadowbrook and the Southern State. I moved to Oceanside and really miss that easy access to the parkways. If you don't think you'll miss the parkways, the train ride is only 45 min and I did love the neighborhood. I hope its able to come back to what it was by next summer.RVC should be a pretty short commute too, and I think the school districts are fine there. I've heard to be careful with Baldwin because some of their schools aren't the best, but I don't know if that's actually true or just talk.

I was looking on Merrick on mlsli.com, it looked really nice and seems to have a good location. I like garden city but the taxes are very, very high and I'd prefer to be closer to the beach or bay. I'm so jealous of people who live and work on Suffolk you get so much more bang for your buck but I cannot even fathom commuting four hours a day, I'm dreading doing two a day from Nassau lol

I grew up in Williston Park also! I live in Long Beach now and it's definitely not a quick 20 minute drive from there. Def look in Merrick or Bellmore. Nice area, not a bad train ride, and there are lots of stores and restaurants.Welcome New Vendors
