NWR: All you teachers I need your help!

I have an interview with the NY fellows on November 13th. I need to do a 5 minute lesson on anything I want. I am going for Elementary so I would like to do something in that age group.

Does anyone have any idea of what I can do in that short of time?

We can start off with 'Class yesterday we discussed .......'

HELP!!! I want to have everything planned and practiced by November 1st so my nerves subside a little bit.

Thanks Girls!!!!

Well I can chose any topic and any grade I want. If I started with yesterday we discussed that 5 minutes would be apart of the lesson I did the day before.

What I wanted to do is make trees with the colored leaves and give one to each student since we have setup time. Say that was there homework then read about how the leaves change colors. I bought a book about it but am waiting to get it, its a kids book probably 1-2 grade level. Its not a big book and may take only 5 minutes.

What do you think?

I think thats a good start...however why are you giving them the trees? I know that the book is about leaves changing colors but does it have a specific purpose? It seems like its not all tying in...does that make sense?

So this is what happens, we get assigned to a group of 6 people who are interviewing. The other people in the interview will be your 'students'.

The tress will be there homework from the night before, which would have been to make a tree using real leaves, then the next day I would teach them why the leaves changed color.

Hows that lol? I should have explained that before

ohh! ok that makes more sense...its too bad you cant do something where they actually 'change the leaves' on the trees ya know?

Hmmm 5 minutes seems a little tight!!!

For my interview, I did a lesson on HAWAII and one part of the lesson was a venn diagram comparison between Hawaii and NY--maybe you can do something similar?

OR you can do something time related. Maybe do a quick lesson on telling time or reviewing phrases like 'half past 12' etc

OR maybe you can do a 'math game' like have a pair of dice and roll them and explain to the 'students' that whatever numbers come up is what they have to add. Whoever has most problems added by the end of the five minutes wins?

I hope this helps! If I think of anything more, I will post!

jesus, sometimes it takes me 5 minutes to prep kids for an activity & give instructions. if this is your interview, i'd prob do something high interest to get the kids involved quickly, like a game or something. i'm secondary ela so it's hard to suggest specific lesson ideas. however, one of the my favorite things to do, and you can adjust the length according to the text you choose, is to read something aloud (as a listening practice) and have them sketch what's being described. maybe focus on something specific like colors or things in nature, etc.

good luck

Well I got a book about the change of the Leaves. I got it last night so now I have to read it aloud to see if I can cram it in in 5 minutes. I do not want to read it to fast because then its like I am rushing. Its so complicated 5 MINUTES!!!!!

Thank you so much for all these ideas!! I am going to try a couple at home and see how long it takes. Once I find something that takes 5 minutes then thats it haha.
