NWR: Any lawyers or those with info on Divorce/alimony

Hey!! My mom just called one of her cousing in regards to her RSVP and we found out that she's thinking of getting a divorce. Apparently her husband and her are basically roomates at this point and she said that he's traveling to PR for three months and she's not even sure if he's coming back. She thinks there may be someone else.

I'll try to make this as short as possible but bascially she is from south america and came here for him. They came together and they decided that one of them would sacrifice and work while the other studies and vice versa. She supported him working two jobs while he didn't work at all!!!! he has about a year left and then supposedly it was her turn. They are both profesionals (hes a doctor and she is an architect) but there was some issues with being recognized here and thats why they were doing it this way.

Her job doesn't pay much and he is now working making much more money than she is. However, they still split the bills. She is afraid that if they are separated she will not be able to support herself just yet. She wanted to know if she was entitled to any alimony or anything like that. I don't know anything about it but I figured this was my first stop in the search for info. There are so many great people on here that maybe someone has some info.

also they've been married for 14 years I don't know if that affects anything.

She is entitled to a share of any money he makes as a result of the degree he earned while they were married. Its marital property.

So sorry to hear this...I will keep her in my prayers

Thank you both for the info. But are the laws different per state? They live in Miami. I think I'm going to tell her she should consult with a local lawyer just in case.

She should consult with a local attorney. Laws can be drastically different in divorce in different states. I don't think Florida is a community property state, but it would be best to check with a local attorney.
