Ok... you might have read my looking for a job thread... Well I got the job transfer w/my company as long as they offer me enough money , I'll say yes. (it's a lateral transfer but I'm not going to do it if they offer less than I'm making now!)
So... I will be living in Huntington and working in NYC... and I'm most scared of the COMMUTE. I'm planning on taking the train but it seems so scary LOL. Coming from L.A. where most people drive (and I've never been more than 25 mins from work) I'm a little nervous taking the LIRR for over an hour every day then walking like 8 or 10 blocks in NYC to work :\
So, tell me the truth.... is it ok? Are the trains crowded at rush hour? (like leaving 7ish and coming back 530 or 6ish?) Is it safe? Will I get a seat? How long will it take me to walk (I think) 8 long blocks and 1 short?
I am kinda freaking out about this!!!!

Re: NWR: Any LIers work in NYC?
leaving from Huntington, you may be able to get a seat, depending on if it starts in Huntington. If so, you should be able to get a seat.
I took the train from Farmingdale all last year and Mineola this year. It can get pretty crowded, and people can be a little rude (its early lol, and a lot of people aren't morning people)
Its safe to take the LIRR in, and its a TON easier and cheaper and less frustrating than driving in.\
Walking, where are you walking to? It can take 10-20 minutes depending on how far you have to go, is it possible to take a subway closer?
Hope this helps, I go in currently from Mineola, then head to Tribeca or the Financial District, and its not that bad. You get used to it. lol

Re: NWR: Any LIers work in NYC?
I wish I could be more exact with my info but I haven't worked in the city for 5 years now, used the Babylon line not near Huntington and commuted later - 8am train in 6:05 back home. That being said, I always felt safe on LIRR, more so than subways. But if you look alert and watch for suspicious people near you that shouldn't be a problem. I think as far as crowds and seats it depends on the line you use. Hickville trains always seemed more crowded with people standing. On Babylon I almost always got a seat, tho sometimes it was what I termed trhe dreaded middle seat and getting squished. but if you get to the platform early and learn where the door opens and position there to get in sooner than later you can get an aisle or window seat usually. - - I don't think it was as bad as it sounds. I used to live in Queens and take buses and subways. Now that was a real hassel compared to LIRR. You learn the routine pretty quick so don't fret about it. There are some negatives but it's not so bad and it balances out the traffic jams you won't have to deal with. the walk depends on the crowds at the time and if you want to get around people or go with the flow. I would think you could do it in about 15 mins. you might want to see if there is a subway stop that would work for you and buy a monthly metrocard. I think if you get a combo ticket you grt a little discount. hope this helps.

I work in Soho and commute from Syosset (on the Huntington line).
The LIRR is pretty easy to take in- there are express trains during rush hour. It is pretty easy to get a seat - a lot of trains start in Huntington so you should not have a problem.
Check out hopstop.com for directions when you are in the city - there might be a bus you can take to avoid walking the 8 long blocks.

I live and work in NYC, but I used to do the commute. it wasn't too bad at all. on the train i got to read, listen to music and I also made friends with my train buddies who i still talk to this very day, we all go out for dinner/drinks. traveling from huntington would be so bad, you'll have a seat and it's probably an hr commute, better than other peoples commute....

Well congrats on the move. I'm sure you wil do fine. I also commute from Huntington and you will find a seat on the train in the morning. The best trains to take are the express ones because there are few stops, you don't have to transfer so that means you can take a nap. That's what I do! Good Luck and don't worry it will just take a little adjusting. Like the morning rush and getting used to everyone walking really really fast! Ohhhh and make sure you wear comfy shoes or leave your shoes in your office and wear sneaker especially if oyu are walking to work from Penn Station. Congrats again!

Re: NWR: Any LIers work in NYC?
My answer might be biased seeing that I've been commuting almost all my life. Yes, it's a little crowded and annoying, but nothing to be scared about. It's tedious and sometimes the train can be delayed which will really make you pissed off, but I feel a lot more comfy in a train than in a car on the highway during rush hour to tell you the truth.
I think you'll be fine, you just need to assimilate urself to it and get adjusted.

I live in Bayside and take the LIRR to the city. I'm on the 8:05 in the Am- ALWAYS get a seat. And the 6:24 or 6:42 home, 9 out of 10 times I get a seat. It's not bad at all. I walk from Penn Station to 40th & Madison everyday- takes about 15 minutes. It's much nicer than the subway- trains have AC and ample seating. It can get annoying that the commute is long, but I get tons of reading done!

I've been commuting into the city from LI for the past 3 years, two years from Bethpage, the past year from Great Neck. The LIRR is not bad at all, I never feel unsafe. You will almost always get a seat. Don't worry about the long train ride. I just use it as naptime! Oh yeah, and wear comfy shoes if you plan on walking, don't ruin good heels, keep them at your desk!

Re: NWR: Any LIers work in NYC?
where in Manhattan is your office? I take the 7:28 from Northport, which is 2 stops east of Huntington. The train takes me to Hunterspoint, then I take the #7 train to Grand Central. The entire commute is about 1 hour and 15 mins, not bad at all. Depending on where your office is, I like to avoid the crown at Penn station. There usually isn't any problem getting a seat in the morning, but I can never find a seat going home, unless if it's after Jamaica.

Re: NWR: Any LIers work in NYC?
Hi! First off, we're getting married on the same day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Commuting is really not scary. I've been commuting for so many years. I also worked in LI for a short period of time and drove to w ork. I find the train much more relaxing - plus you can read or even sleep. The main difference is commuting has more of a hustle than anything else. AS far as getting a seat, try to take a train in the morning where Huntington is the first stop. That way you are guaranteed a seat. On the way home, you'll get a seat, just may not be on a window or aisle. But usually after Jamaica it opens up. GOOD LUCK!

Re: NWR: Any LIers work in NYC?
I commute from Huntington to NYC everyday for work - I always get a seat. It's exactly 1 hour from Huntington to Penn Station (if you don't have any delays), or Huntington to Hunterspoint (which is better for me regarding commuting time).
The only thing you'll have to worry about is parking - the garage fills up kind of quickly. I would say the latest you can get to the parking lot is 8:15, but for most people that's not a problem.
If you want, feel free to FM me the general area of where you'll be working and I can help you find the route you'll have to take. Maybe we can even be commuting buddies. Although I just sleep the entire time...

Re: NWR: Any LIers work in NYC?
i lived with FH in Huntington right before we relocated to Philly and used to take the 7:12a train to Penn every morning. it was express to Penn (only 3 other stops), it filled up quickly, but Huntington was the first stop. if i got there early enough, i got a seat. I used to try to sleep on the train, which was almost impossible for me. to me, the commute was annoying, a bit of a hassle, and somewhat expensive, but many people do it every day and it goes along with the territory of living on Long Island and working in the city. you have nothing to worry about!!! Re: NWR: Any LIers work in NYC?
Except for two years that I worked in Garden City and another two years that I lived in NYC, I've been commuting for almost 10 years.
Once you get used to the routine, it'll just become part of your day. LIRR is very safe, especially during rush hour when it's all commuters taking the trains. My FH thought the trains were always like they are coming home on a Saturday night from the city until he got on a rush hour train with me and saw that everybody pretty much keeps to themselves with iPods, books or just dozing off.
I actually left the city to work in Garden City because I thought it would be an easier commute, but after having to deal with traffic every morning, I went back into the city.
I moved to Queens, thinking the commute would be easier not having to deal with the LIRR, and after dealing with the subways, I decided I'd never complain about the LIRR again.
Just realize that there will be times when trains will be delayed and when a switch blows in Jamiaca or Penn Station, accept that you will be stuck in the city for a few hours, but those aren't regular occurences.
The monthly ticket can be pricey, but when you factor in gas and parking for driving into the city, it ends up being much cheaper.

Re: NWR: Any LIers work in NYC?
HI Thank you guys for the replies. You have helped allay my fears some LOL I hate change. Work will be on Park Ave at 32nd St or 31st. Like 8 long blocks. the station is 10 to 15 mins away, and there's a chance that FH can drop me off, depending on my schedule. Is parking free? I've only ever taken the train on weekends. And how much does a monthly pass cost?
I am a little worried about getting stuck in NYC and stuff but I guess whatever happens happens.
i also am worried about how it'll be COLD (and windy cold) and maybe snowy... but I guess I'll deal with that later. It's not so bad now is it? I'm not so sure about dealing w/a subway and the extra time it would take?
And that I'll have no time at all to do anything during the week. I live close to work now and am home before 4 every day. It's fabulous I think I'll end up even more exhausted than I am already!!!
I am looking forward to having free time to read though! (There's no way I will nap)
You all have been so helpful, thank you SO much!!!!I'll
