NWR: Any Vets or dog experts out there?

Hi,
I have a beagle who can't seem to keep her ears clean no matter how many times a week I clean them for her.

Sorry to be gross, but every time I clean her ears you wouldn't believe the black gook that comes out. Even if I cleaned them the day before.

Them to seem to always itch her and they smell so bad.

My FI cleaned them one day and he made her bleed so I am afraid to do it too deep.

What else can I do for her?

Thanks

i have the same problem with my St. Bernard. I worked for a vet, and there were many dogs like that.

This issue happens a lot in dogs with floppy ears. There are meds out there that will help - but none that will elimenate the prob.

Every night you need to put about 1/2 tsp of hydrogen peroxide in each ear - way down in the ear canal. Massage the ear (you should hear the squishing of the perodide). Do this for about 1/2 minute and then take a Q-tip and clean it out

hope this helps!

My sisters dog has the same problem. Not to be too gross but she has dark nasty stuff in her ears. It is actaully a yeast infection caused by moisture. Go to the vet and get meds to clear it up. Roo gets her ears cleaned once a week and meds once a day for a week when she gets stinky ears. Keeping the ears clean is important. We use an alcohol/vinegar combination. The vinegar kills the yeast and the alcohol dries the ear. After checking with the vet use a squirt container to put the liquid in the ear and massage the ear. After use cotton to clean the gunk out. The vet told us that the ear drum is deep (Roo is a retriever) so not to worry about hurting it. The vet said keep sqirting/massage then wipe untill it is all out then put the meds in. good luck and always dry the dogs ears after a bath or coming in after the rain.

Definitely go to the vet. It's probably something simple that a prescription can take care of.

My cousin's keyshound had something similar in one of his ears. The vet gave a script for some ear drops that cleared it right up.

Beagles are known for ear infections. I would go to the Vet and get some Otomax-specifically for ear infections. I clean my dogs ears with peroxcide and then use the Otomax-I have English Springer Spaniels-also known for ear infections. This usually does the trick. A lot of my customers are using Otomax now and everyone is really happy with it. Unfortunately though-beagles ears need lots of cleaning anyway-so keep up the good work.

I just flushed it out a little and massaged the ear....Ill try it again tomorrow. If it doesnt help in a few days Ill have to bring him in.

Our dog has the same problem, the difference is (unfortunately and not by choice) her ears ar clipped. We have this stuff to put in her ears every so often, they are still dirty but they dont bother her with the itching

my poodle had the same problem and the vet said it was ear mites so he was on an ear medication that we put into his ear then the vet gave us otomax to suirt down his ear and massage it in like twice a week....also ive noticed that since we started using revolution (its for hearworm , fleas, ticks, and mites) he hasnt had as many episodes, one of the vets at the animal clinic i go to recomended it and says that the thing he uses on all his cats and dogs

If there is black nasty and smelly stuff coming out of your dogs ears please take her/him to the vet!

My dog is a maltese and they have floppy ears as well and they are also prone to yeast ear infections and every week i clean her ears with a gentle ear cleaning solution i bought at petco and like someone previously mentioned before i use Ottomax once a week which helps prevent reoccurant ear infections and soothes the itchiness. If not treated ear infections can become serious because they are so close to the the brain and sinuses. Plus it is extremely uncomfortable for your dog. Take him to the vet asap.

UPDATE-The Vinigar & water...Miracle! Seriously. My pooch has had the problem for prob a month if not 2 and about 20 min after I poured the solution in his ear its all better!

Hi,
I will try the vinegar and the water.....

I have been to the vet twice about this and all he gives me is the same medicine that works for a short time.
We are due to go in for her yearly shots. I will ask him about that medication everyone had mentioned.

Thanks

I have no good advice, but I hope it works out for you. There's nothing worse than not knowing how to help your pup!

I know. what you mean Bubba's Bride...she did not feel well after Christmas because my family won't stop feeding her things under the table.

I yell at them every year!

She threw up and was not herself the whole day.

I was so sad for her. I wish they could tell us what's wrong. When I see her like that I would give her the moon if it made her feel better.

Off the topic.......has anyone ever made fun of you for letting the dog sleep in your bed? Such as: ILLLLL how gross!

Someone recently made another comment to me about it and I wanted to rip their head off!

I love my dog more than people sometimes and it does not bother me, I wish people would keep comments to themselves!

I personally let my dog sleep in my bed every now and then, but he likes sleeping in his crate too. But I don't find it gross at all. I know people who are way dirtier than my dog!

But I agree with you, some days that pug is the only living thing I like!!!
