my dog has been having a lot of allergy problems lately, to the point where she was losing fur, had thinning fur, itching, biting etc... so we took her to the vet and she has been on antihistamine meds. The vet also did an allergy test.
today we got the piliminary allergy report back (so I am assuming we will be finding out more things she is allergic to when we get the rest back)
I am so upset.. she is basically allergic to everything. Here is a list of some ofthe things we were told she is allergic to so far...
all insects (esp fleas - the doctor said she can go into a anifilactic shock if one even walks on her) all trees all grasses chicken lamb beef pork peanuts rice sheep pollen dandelions and the strangest - i thought.. COTTON.. so basically me just wearing a cotton shirt is bad for her
she will have to stay on antihistamine meds and will have to be on a strict food diet
does anyone else have a dog that is allergic like this? I feel so bad for her and on top of that its prob going to cost a fortune to keep her on meds ($30 every 2 weeks) and special food.

Re: NWR: Anyone have a dog with severe ALLERGIES???
aww i'm so sorry to hear that!! so i'm assuming she just developed these allergies? or is she new?
My dog doesnt have any (i believe), but he def has some kind of respiratory thing. he coughs all the time, like he has something in his throat and i feel so bad!
Also, he's had a slipped disc twice and his back legs were paralyzed! It was the saddest thing in the world for me. Luckily, he responded to medication and didnt need surgery. Also had a cyst on his neck where they had to take fluid out.
I hope her allergies do not act up!!

awww thanks!! she has developed them - the vet said that sometimes this happens when they get older (she is only 5). We have had her since she was a puppy.
your poor dog too! im glad he is doing better !!!! its so hard to see them go through stuff when they cant talk to you, and my dog never complains, never cries.. she had a broken leg for over a month and all we thought was that she had hip displastia she was running around like nothing... she had to have surgery to have 2 pins put in her leg/

he's small sized (toy poodle). Even though he's old, i think of him as a baby. He was overweight before, so whenever he tried to jump up on the couch or bed and couldnt reach, he would land back down putting pressure on his back, so thats how he got the slipped discs.

I'm so sorry to hear that and to top it off that sad little face she's got doesn't help. It really ***** having a sick pet. I think they should issue SS #'s to pets so that they can be claimed on our taxes, considering costs that go intohealthcare for them. I have a yellow lab that is the love of my life and had respiratory problems when he was a puppy, but thankfully so far is healthy . Good Luck and spoil her with extra good treats now.

if you need to give her pills, i highly recommend pill pockets. they are like soft treats the consistency of play dough that are hollow-- you put the pill inside and they eat it w/out a problem.
our vet gave us samples when one of my kitties needed pills for 2 weeks and it was amazing. amazon has a lot of reviews and also bulk if you need to give it long term.

Aww that is terrible! I hope she feels better soon-we have a pug and because there face is pushed in they are more likely to have respiratory problems, which I happen to have with her! I highly recommend pet insurance if they allow you get it can help with the medicine expense.

thank you for the info but the Vet said she cant have anything that is not her hyperallergetic foold now - no cookies, no table scraps not even a piece of my other dogs food.
she will have to be on this for 2 months - to clear her system and then we can go from there

we are not completely sure yet, it will def be hypoallergetic but we are waiting to hear back from the vet with the rest of the test results before we start purchasing food.

Re: NWR: Anyone have a dog with severe ALLERGIES???
My dog also has very severe allergies. She is allergic to beef, chicken, milk, flax, oats, yeast, fish, cooton, dust mites, mosquitos and grasses and trees. Its so horrible! She is so uncomfortable all the time. Right now she takes histamines twice a day steriods every other day and a new drug called atopica every other day. You might wanna ask your vet about atopica. It works wonders for many dogs(unfortunately it hasnt really worked to well for mine but she is better on it) but its very expensive $150 for 30 pills. We have gone to many different vets and now we might try giving her descentization allergy shots every week cause nothing else we have tried has worked so far!

oh wow!! thank you for responding! that is horrible your poor dog! So far with Pebbles being on the histamine (2x a day also) has really helped - but its winter and the trees and grasses arent so bad. im worried for her in the summer.
Thank you for the info - will look into that! GL with your dog - i hope they find something that works for her
did you try going online to see if the medicine is any cheaper?

Re: NWR: Anyone have a dog with severe ALLERGIES???
Thats a really good sign if all she needs is the histamine twice day and she is doing better!! Many dogs with allergies have to be on severe medications that cause a lot of other problems for the rest of their lives. Maybe because pebbles is older when she got the allergies it wont be so bad!! I hope so!! Bianca started having allergies at 6 months old and it has gotten worse and worse. The vet told me that unlike with people where we tend to grow out of our allergies dogs allergies usually get more intense as they get older. I have looked online but unfortunelty havent found meds any cheaper. But hopefully the allergy shots will work and she can be off many of the meds soon cause I'm worried about the damage it might cause her liver. Good luck with your dog as well!!!

aww christing your poor baby!!! yeah they can test for so many things. you should def talk to your vet about it, it was a few hundred dollars but at least now we know to keep her away from that stuff!! i just hope that the food is not too expensive. its hard too because we have 2 dogs and a rabbit so im hoping when the other tests come back that she isnt allergic to dogs and rabbits, though she is allergic to the rabbit hay so we have to be careful between the other dogs food and the rabbits that she doesnt eat them
this is si frustrating and we dont even have all the info back yet

Re: NWR: Anyone have a dog with severe ALLERGIES???
I have a dog with severe allergies!
He was on antihistimes, but now hes on simplcel and before baytril, cause his allergies got really bad and got cysts on his foot. His allergies were so bad he had to be shaved and we could rub medicine on him.
You might want to have your doctor check your dog's thyroid levels cause it has the same symptoms too. My dog has low thyroid hormones so he might need to go on synthroid.
I switched his dog food to wellness and he has been doing better. If your dog is allergic to beed, chicken.. they have whitefish and also allergy food.
Oh you might want to be careful with cortizone cause it has really bad side effects on dogs if used a lot. My new vet will not give buddy a cortizone shot unless necessary cause he use to get one every month during the summer his first year and after that every 6 months.
Thank goodness for pet insurance!!!!
Good Luck with everything and FM me if you have any questions.

Re: NWR: Anyone have a dog with severe ALLERGIES???
My fiance is a Vet Tech, he said first off if you haven't gotten a second opinion, you should. I don't know where you live but Centereach animal hospital (not the animal hospital of centereach two different vets right up the road from each other) is excellent. Dr. Sito is the doctors name, he is very smart, caring and will be very up front with you, not just out to try and take your money. Very often he won't do allergy testing because you will get this whole list of stuff that they can 'possibly' be allergic to, but most of the time it's something very simple that is easier to find just by process of elimination. Skin problems can be very frustrating because even if you know whats wrong and have a treatment that works, it still takes a while to heal and start to look better. Also I don't know what type of antihistamine your dog is on but diphenhydramine also known as benadryl is ok for dogs(same stuff we would take). I think a 100 pound dog could have 50 mg twice a day. Check your medication bottle from the doctor and see what has been prescibed. Sometimes vets will prescribe their own stock at high prices meanwhile you can buy it over the counter and generic brands for under $10. I have some other things to try also but this is long enough allready. If you think this has been of help FM me.

thank you for the info
the info we got back were things she is DEF allergic to - not possible - but i will look again to make sure.
she isnt on the Benadryl she was for a while and it didnt do anything for her.. she continuted to scratch and plus she would have to be given it 3 times a day (since it only lasts for 8 hours) she is on something with a C (i dont have it in front of me) and its def helping her!!! we have def seen a difference from her just being on that med.
