Kids find parents dead inside home

A close-knit Syosset neighborhood was rocked Tuesday when two young boys came home from school to find the most gruesome discovery: their parents apparently shot to death.

Homicide detectives were searching for a motive in the double homicide in one of Long Island's lower-crime and higher-income enclaves.

The bodies of Jaspal Singh, 46, and Geeta Singh, 55, were found at about 3:10 p.m. in their Doone Drive home, police said.

'It does not appear to be a murder-suicide,' said Det. Lt. Kevin Smith, a spokesman for Nassau police. 'We have two homicides.'

Residents said the Singhs had lived in the house for less than a year and formerly lived in Rego Park.

Police have few clues as to who killed the couple and why, but they said the couple's kids made the discovery and sought help -- but it was too late.

When the boys, ages 12 and 13, arrived home, they found the door locked, police said. Usually, their mother greets them, but when she didn't answer the door, the boys used a spare key to get into the house, police said.

After the finding, one of the boys ran screaming across the street to a neighbor, who called police. 'He was yelling, 'Call 911,' my dad is on the floor and he's not breathing,'' said Michael Moore, 13, who lives across the street. 'They were saying, 'How could this happen to us?''

Last night, about three dozen family members and friends gathered at the Bethpage home of Joginder Singh, 37, the brother of Jaspal Singh. The group sat cross-legged, shoulder-to-shoulder in the living room and kitchen, in stocking feet, and speaking quietly. Joginder trembled when asked about his nephews.

'Two parents are dead,' he said. 'Terrible. This guy never harmed anybody.'

Looking around at his crowded Bethpage home, Singh said, 'They can't bring them back.'

Back at the house in Syosset, a friend of the Singhs, Raj Maini, said he and his wife were concerned about the two boys, both students at Syosset's H.B. Thompson Middle School. Syosset school officials said they would offer grief counseling to students Wednesday.

'We're horrified,' said Randi Sachs, a spokeswoman for the Syosset school district. 'We're very upset by this news and we're going to try to help the children deal with it at school.'

Maini said he had no idea why someone would hurt the couple, which he said emigrated from Punjab state in northwest India nearly two decades ago.

'They've been here 18 years and never had a problem, so why now?' he asked.

'They never disturbed anyone. They were a good family,' said Vikramjit Singh, who knew Jaspal Singh's family in India. He also said he attended church with the Singh family in Elizabethtown, N.J.

The crime scene drew dozens of onlookers, some who said they had never heard of such a crime in a community of 18,500 people that boasts a median family income of $100,000, according to the 2000 census.

'I've been living here since I was 2 and nothing like this has happened,' said Rob Pasternak, a 28-year-old neighbor.

Family friends said Jaspal Singh ran Economy Foam, a business in Manhattan. He also owned a service station in Long Island, they said.

They were remembered by their former neighbors in Rego Park as 'a loving family, a nice family, a close-knit family,' said a man who lives near the Singhs' former 63rd Road home.

That neighbor, who declined to be identified, said the Singhs lived there for about six years, and that the family moved to Long Island about a year ago to be closer to relatives.
