NWR: anyone know anything about Fort Greene? What about Glen Cove?
SO mine and FH's lease is up in March and we can't wait to move out of our tiiiiny 5th floor walk up West Village apartment. We are ready to leave Manhattan and enjoy the space offered in Brooklyn or on LI. I have seen a TON of stuff about new luxury developments in Fort Greene, but I only really know Park Slope area. Anyone know anything about Fort Greene? Is it a nice neighborhood for a couple with a dog? Thoughts?
What about Glen Cove? It's a little further from the city than I want to be but also has some nice rentals - I'm wondering if it is an older neighborhood, not so much for younger couples. Thoughts again?
I guess I'm really seeing the downside of not being from here, and FH is totally useless. He's like 'Hewlett is good...' cuz that is where he's from and basically lives in his own little bubble! So any help would be majorly appreciated! Thanks!!!

Fort Greene is fantastic. It's just north of the Atlantic Center/Flatbush LIRR terminal, and is teeming with little shops and restaurants. There's a good park for dogs, too.
You can still get pretty decent deals on apartments, but be careful to check cross-streets, especially if you're looking at ads off of Craigslist. Frequently, realtors will say buildings are in Fort Greene when they're really in Bed Stuy.

I live in Glen Cove and love it. There is a younger crowd that frequents the bars and such downtown, but many of the residents (at least from what I've seen) are families with children or older couples. Where in Glen Cove are you looking? Some places are better than others. I'd be happy to answer any other questions you have, I've lived here my whole life!

Really right now the only thing that has caught my eye is the Avalon. FH and I have been living in a tiny, old walk up for too long and we want the opposite now - something new, bright, spacious and with an elevator!!!! I know Avalon has a great reputation and on the site there are two buildings in GC with availabilities for our time frame so it was really a fairly new thought....any info on that area?

Gold & Johnson looks like it's more in Downtown Brooklyn. Is that the new building off of Flatbush? If so, it might be worth a look.

my friend just moved to fort greene, definitely up and coming - has character like park slope but better prices. lots of cute bars/restaurants, perfect for a young couple with a dog-- but smart suggestion above, double check the true locations ....
johnson and gold street is kind of a dead area. if it's Oro or one of the new buildings they are really nice, it is right near the police precinct, but at the same time i might not feel super safe walking around there alone at night, right near projects, BQE, not a lot of open stores, etc.
good luck!

I lived at the Avalon in Glen cove for 3 years, and i loved it there! the pool is awesome. I used it constantly. When I lived there, most of the residents were in our age group, so I made a lot of friends. it has a small movie theatre, a gym and a pool table room, so there are plenty of things to do. it is right near the town which has restaurants, bars and a movie theatre. you are also really close to the beach. The parking lot is so convenient especially when it snows.
ask me anything you want to know!! I'd be happy to help. sometimes i wish i still lived there lol
