NWR: Anyone know of a good university for forensics?

I'm helping my FSIL (she's 19) fill out applications... she's currently at a 2 year school on a softball scholarship (Division I) and has a GPA of 3.8.. She wants to go away... so it can be anywhere in the US..

Does anyone know of any school or perhaps a site where I can go to?

thanks!

what type of forensics? My friend got her masters degree from Northwestern in forensic pathology - I think she told me that they had something for BS but not sure. There is always John Jay.

I got my MA from LSU is physical/forensic anthropology. It all depends on what she wants to do. If it is crime research/forensic focus than both LSU and Tenessee have very good programs.

I know St. John's University has a really good criminal justice department. I know one of friends took a couple of forensic classes.

I am currently at John Jay going for my masters in Forensic Psychology, there is currently no college that has a Doctorate Program for Forensic Pschology that is known through APA, so I either have to wait a few years or go for my doctorate in Clinical Psy.. Also I know you said she wants to go away but when she finds a program she may be able to go through one that offers a BA/MA that is only five years rather then four for her BA and an additonal two for her masters.. Tell her definately to look into the program first because if she does want to get her docotorate she wants to make sure there is a program avaliable that is known..

Yes, LSU is Louisiana State. They have a very well know foresnic lab called the F.A.C.E.S. lab. The forensic anthropologist that runs the lab is very respected in the field. While i was there I worked on several real-life cases in collaboration with the local sheriff's dept in terms of helping identify bodies, etc. Plus it's so fun there!

I think SUNY Albany has a criminal justice program there...they might also have forensics...worth a shot to check it out

University of New Haven in Connecticut...my brother went there for fire science but his girlfriend for forensics. Very small school but very beautiful campus.

Re: NWR: Anyone know of a good university for forensics?

She might want to rethink the staying in Ny, unless she is from NYC, john jay is a very different experience then another other ny school.

I went my frehsman year to a school in Pa and came home because the dean pretty much told me why waste my money when I have the best school at home for what I want to do. I came home went to JJAY have an amazing degree and had awesome internships and have absolutely no student loans due to being a resident of ny. If she wants to fully continue and get a MA, and eventually PhD then she should be looking into something that will be incredible for her as well as save her money.
She can do CJ and have concentrations in Forensics at many schools but at JJay even your cores are thought from a Criminalolgy/sociology aspect which makes you better prepared for after you have your BA.
Basically, my case is this. There a tons of unemployed wives down at the NAVY base we are living at, I'm not.

Ok, as I get off my soap box, any college is what you make of it social wise and I was having a great time being away and can't blame her for wanting to go away.. But fiancially my father was laid off from a company he worked at for 20 years and money was tight. So, jjay was awesome for me and I made it the college experience I wanted. Plus, after transferring back to Ny. I meet my husband, who was at the Air Force Academy in Colorado. I was able to fly out to Colorado every 3-4 weeks to see him because of the money I was saving, and the schedule I had.

I wish her the best of luck!

Thanks soo much for your input..

To be honest, FSIL needs to leave NY state...there are too many negative things going on here and she needs to get away and see what life is like outside of NY...

Dreading putting this, because I am guessing they are personal issues but if they are just ones with the world today or Ny in general she might be going into the wrong field because it isn't all like what it appears to be on tv and it can be very gruesome and tiresome.

Also, I hope if getting away is what she needs that she can and it works to her advantage.

Best of luck!
Ps. Like I said I went away for that first year, and had been out of the country and had a boyfriend (then now husband from Philly, but living in Colorado) So, I was good to go with seeing the world and now that he is in pilot training we are in Pensacola, then Oklahoma next year and then moving every three years. Yikes! Just glad I stayed those extra few years close to home since now I'm not.
