Teach them about something, make them brainstorm and then towards the end of class go over their answers and ideas. Kind of like an open discussion.

Re: NWR: Anyone who teaches
Well I teach math, but my dad taught history/economics/sociology for 34 years at Brentwood HS. I would suggest having many different parts to your lesson. Like seperate activities. You could start by checking hw and having a do now, then go over the do now, then maybe lecture for 10-15 minutes, then have a hands on lesson, maybe a group activity, then regroup and pull it all together, review what you taught, then assign the hw. Does that help? This way the more you plan, if you dont get to it all, you can save it for the next day.

Re: NWR: Anyone who teaches
I also teach math and my day goes like this
Warmup/Do Now Go over HW Lesson Practice Lesson Quiz
Every day I give a 4 to 5 question quiz on what we covered. Sometimes I count it sometimes I don't.
