NWR: Apartment hunting advice

FH and I are starting to do some Apartment hunting. We would most likely like to move in in May so we are settled before our wedding in July and June is a busy month for me at work. We are looking to stay either in Nassau or boderline Nassau/Queens since I work in NYC and he works in Westbury.

Do you ladies have any tips/advice things we should look for? We both live at home so this is completely new to us.

I know we would need 1st months rent, security deposit and a credit check. Not sure what most realtors charge and if you have to go through one. How long the process takes. We are a little lost so any advice would help.

We are looking for a 1br 1bath preferably in a building for approx $1300/mo.

Thanks ladies for your help. (sorry for the long post)

Generally the broker's fee and the security deposit are each equal to one month's rent.

I live in a great building on the Hempstead/Garden City border. Very very safe area. You are a few minutes away from either the Garden City or Hempstead train station and very close to Westbury.

The apt we have is HUGE, it's a one bedroom one bath. The rent is a bit higher than you were looking for at about 1425/mth, but you will save a lot because there is no broker involved.

Let me know if you need more info.

just keep checking craigslist and Newsday. Get ready to look at a lot of crappy places that look nothing like there picture.

if you're looking for a building, you most definitely don't need a real estate agent. if you wanted one in a house then yes, i would possibly rec. using one. i happened to find both of my places myself by just constantly looking.

Try word of mouth first since the broker fee can equal one month to a month and a half's rent. Also look on Craigslist and here on this board. If you attend any religious places, usually their newsletter has a real estate ad section as well. Other than that...peruse local neighborhood papers in the areas you're interested in.

Happy Hunting!

i would not go through a broker, waste of money imo, just keep checking out craigslist and newsday.

the one thing i would definitely ask if your looking for a building...the apartment they show you, ask if that is the EXACT one you will be getting, if they show you 4B, make sure you get 4B on the lease....we had this problem in our 1st apartment, we were shown one and got another and the layout was completely different.
