We watched Fast Food nation the other night. I know the book's been around forever and it's all old news...
Lately, I just feel like I don't want to eat little animals anymore. I know I'm kind of oldish to realize this, but here's the only thing, I don't like any seafood and live on poultry. Like for lunch and dinner chicken or turkey.
Then there's carbs, I can't have too many of those because I'm trying to lose 100 lbs
I feel like maybe first step would be to cut cows and piggies out of my life - then try to move onto chickens and turkey.
Any input would be appreciated.

I guess just like how and why you don't eat meat, any tips for someone just starting out and trying.
I signed up for some starter kit at goveg.com
I don't know. When I read things about slaughter houses and how they now are skinning and killing cows ALIVE etc I feel so ill and depressed. I can't explain it.

I have been a vegetarian for 6 and a half years.
I am a passionate advocate of veggie eating, so FM me for more information about how I eat, what I eat, and how I've been able to keep weight off with this healthy lifestyle.
Yay veggies!!!!

I'm not a vegetarian but my friends wife is and her saying is that she just won't eat anything that has a face. So she eats a lot of salad and pasta. If you do some research there's really a lot of food you can eat! I consider it all the time but then there are little things I don't want to let go! I LOVE seafood!

Re: NWR: Are any of you vegetarians?
i was a strict vegetarian for 9yrs.. now i eat some meat.. really just chicken, shrimp and tuna fish. and even when i do eat it i still cringe and the meat has to be covered in some kind of flavoring or bread crumbs lol. i stopped eating all meat, seafood and poultry back in 9th grade after a fetal pig dissection that totally grossed me out.. just the thought of the flesh and how it used to be part of a living animal grosses me out... i keep saying im gonna go back to not eating ANY of it but its hard when you need to eat something with not much time to cook or shop.. fast food is so easy.. so i wind up sucking it up and eating some chicken or something.

Just a thought - if that is what bothers you, maybe try to eat less meat, so when you eat it you can afford the more expensive grass fed and organic meat?
In general, meat that is grass fed, or from a local purveyor (I get mine at whole foods and the NYC greenmarkets) is treated well. They get to graze and wander and take their time gaining weight, and have a normal 'animal' life...
I suggest anyone feeling this way read The Omnivore's Dilemma or In Defense of Food, both by Michael Pollan. he also has some great articles on NYTimes.com.
HTH!

Re: NWR: Are any of you vegetarians?
I love animals and like the idea of being a vegetarian, but I keep telling myself that people are animals and it's natural for animals to eat other animals. I try not to think about it...
I have Crohn's disease and I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to survive as a vegetarian because I'm limited w/ respect to what I can eat. I'd probably end up eating spaghetti and sauce every day until I shrivelled up and died...

Re: NWR: Are any of you vegetarians?
I was a vegetarian when I was 10- I just decided not to eat meat anymore. But I guess because I was so young (and I have a heart condition) I got really sick quite a few times, from not getting the right nutirents.
So, now I eat chicken, turkey and fish. It's healthy and we need protein to be healthy. I'm sure being a vegetarian can be healthy too, but it's just hard.
Also, I don't really like the fact that we're eating animals, but that's not why I did it. I just don't like meat, it grosses me out.
I really think it's a personal choice, but remember, it's a commitment and its not so easy at first. If you have questions, feel free to Fm me. Don't think you're going to lose tons of weight by doing it though, trust me!

I only eat poultry. I'm one of those hypocrites who doesn't eat meat or fish, but I'll wear leather and eat turkey. I'm a weird gal. I can't eat furry things, but I HATE birds, so I don't feel as bad about that.

Re: NWR: Are any of you vegetarians?
I've been a vegetarian for 9 years. It's really easy, especially in NY / LI. There are SO many good options for veggies now in the regular supermarkets. And I never feel like I'm missing out. At first, I'd smell a hamburger and think, 'mmmm! Wish I could eat that!' But after about 6 weeks of not eating meat, you kind of lose a taste for it. It just looks... not like food. I can't explain it.
Here's what I ate yesterday, as an example:
-Had all-you-can-eat brunch (YUM!) at Ayhans. Mediterranean food has so many veggie options - salads, cous cous, roasted veggies, and rice pudding for dessert.
- snack was a banana
- dinner was a veggie burger with Green Giant broccoli in cheese sauce. Was still hungry so had an English muffin with jelly for dessert (so sue me, I'm weird!).
Today:
- oatmeal and a yogurt for breakfast
- lunch was a bagel with butter and a 100 Calorie pack of cookies
- some pretzels as an after-work snack
- dinner will be homemade quesadillas with cheese, peppers, mushrooms, and fake chicken (the Smart Ground brand - it's small, chopped pieces. You wouldn't eat them on their own, but thrown into rice dishes, mexican, etc. they taste good!)
btw, I need to lose weight to fit into my wedding dress, and limit myself to 1500-1800 calories a day (depending on if I work out). It's super easy. Sure, a lot of those are carbs, but I eat a lot of dairy and one protein-y 'fake meat' a day too.

Sounds good. and you're getting protein. My issue was since I don't like the taste of meat, I usually don't like the fake meats, bc they're made to taste like meat. I'm good with my chicken & fish though.

Re: NWR: Are any of you vegetarians?
I'm vegetarian and have been for about 5 years or so. More from an environmental than a animal loving stand point.
I have no problem getting what I need and I was a college athlete when I made the transition and had NO problems with nutrition, fatigue, etc. (well, I was fatigued at times but that was mostly b/c of 2 a days and all-nighters!)
I try to eat healthy, which means a lot of low-fat cheese (yogurt, cottage cheese) and some yummy fattening cheese (I lived in Wisconsin for 3 years, sue me). I eat a lot of beans and vegetables--a lot of Mediterranean and Mexican--mostly homemade to avoid huge amounts of fat.
I don't necessarily miss meat. The only times when it bothers me is when I go out of town and cannot find anywhere to eat (Savannah, Charleston, and St. Augustine were all AWFUL when it came to veggie options). And then, I could likely find something to eat but I don't feel like spending a ton of money for gross pasta, veggie burgers, or salad when I don't want to eat one of those. I'm a little nervous about my honeymoon, but I'm sure I won't starve to death.
I don't have a perfect diet--I doubt many of the brides on here do. If you're a little nervous about making the transition, maybe you should talk to a nutritionist. I wish I did when I started (I was fine, but awfully nervous about it).

We don't eat meat anymore...we only eat fish. I have to say that I do not miss meat....and I feel much better. Good luck...it is much easier that FH and I don't meat...I think it would be really hard to do it alone.

Re: NWR: Are any of you vegetarians?
fh and i are both vegetarians - we're actually having a veggie reception! the thing is, if you eat properly on a veggie diet you won't gain weight (in fact you might loose, depending on how your diet was before). people gain because they don't do the research beforehand and think vegetarian means eating carbs. it doesn't. i have very few carbs a day, and when i do they're the good kind (whole grain, etc.).
i'm not sure what you're looking for as to information, but i'd be happy to help however i can. feel free to fm me!
