if you are a teacher that has worked in a low income school for 5 years you may be eligible for loan forgiveness!!! Special ed teachers can get up to $17,500!
I applied for this on the last day of school (the last day of my fifth year) and I just received notice that my loans have been decreased by the full amount of 17,500!!! Thought I would spread the word, we have earned it!

Re: NWR: attn teachers!
I found out about this in the spring. Too bad I had only 2,000 left in loans. At least they paid that for me!

I know I don't understand that either... I would do some research though you might qualify for another loan forgiveness somewhere!
thanks!

Re: NWR: attn teachers!
Wow, amazing!!! But why is it only up to 5,000 for reg. elementary teachers, but 17,500 for special ed, secondary math and science teachers?

Re: NWR: attn teachers!
My DH made a good point that the loan forgiveness is to get teachers to stay in these schools as some sort of an incentive. Maybe they need more spec. ed teachers? who knows?

Re: NWR: attn teachers!
Low income schools are schools where students get free or reduced lunch. There is a list of schools that qualify on the govt's website. Unfortunately I took my loans out 1 year too early and I don't qualify even though I've worked in low income schools since 2001.

Re: NWR: attn teachers!
A friend of mine from work gave me the info... yes it should still be around next year so fill it out at the end of next year.
I think that it is more for special ed teachers both as incentive but also because a special ed degree costs more money perhaps? It's a 3 year degree instead of a 2 year one? That's just a guess I am not sure!
