NWR: attn teachers!

Original post by FutureMcBride

if you are a teacher that has worked in a low income school for 5 years you may be eligible for loan forgiveness!!! Special ed teachers can get up to $17,500!

I applied for this on the last day of school (the last day of my fifth year) and I just received notice that my loans have been decreased by the full amount of 17,500!!! Thought I would spread the word, we have earned it!

Wow, amazing!!! But why is it only up to 5,000 for reg. elementary teachers, but 17,500 for special ed, secondary math and science teachers?

we would be low income right??

Low income schools are schools where students get free or reduced lunch. There is a list of schools that qualify on the govt's website. Unfortunately I took my loans out 1 year too early and I don't qualify even though I've worked in low income schools since 2001.

kids at my school get free and reduced lunch but my school is not considered low income

I finished my 5th year in June too and applied! I have to make a correction on my application and send it back. It looks like it will go through! I qualify for the 17,500 too!!!! I can't wait!

I had to send it back twice, it was ridiculous!

I DID just get a notification today that all of my loan is paid off now!!

How do you find the schools? I can't find that list and I think my school may be considered.

For the special ed teacher, do you have to be iself contained or resource room? I teach an inclusion class and am certified in special ed, would that qualify me for the $17,500?

Thanks, good to know!

Don't you have to pay for 5 years first?
