Just got some news that a friend of the family (who is getting married in a few months) is pregnant. The mother of the groom found out yesterday and she is so sad...long story- well this wedding was her dream, basically she was living vicariously through her son and daughter in lae to be- now to find out she is pregnant it is tearing her apart...
They are debating moving the wedding up or having an abortion... she was on birth control and she was drinking ...they are nervous that the baby could have problems because of this...
I will keep my opinions to myself regarding their possible decisions, but my real question, is HAS anyone become pregnant or do you know someone who has become pregnant on birth control...and what possible problems can occur?
Thank you in advance- any advice i can give to them would be great because i am at a loss right now

Re: NWR-BC and Pregnancy- LONG
Wow. What a story. Well, it's never happened to me nor anyone I know. BUT, I'd be more concerned about the drinking than about being on the pill and getting PG. I just read a thread on the 05 board about people who got PG on the pill and the kids are all fine. But the amount of alcohol that was consumed is the real concern.

I have a friend who got pregnant on the pill and her baby came out perfectly healthy. The drinking really depends on HOW much drinking. Most women have an occasional while pregnant in the early stages, because they aren't yet aware of the pregnancy (myself included). I'd be a little worried if she was doing any type of binge drinking... other than that, the baby should be ok.

My sister has 3 kids...all three were conceived while on the Pill (Ortho Tri-Cyclen). She claims to have never missed a pill, was not on any other medication...it's freaky but not impossible. The fact that it happened to her 3X leads me to think she's not that careful, but she swears she was avoiding them. But my SIL got pregnant while on Depo. Crazy, huh?
All babies were born healthy and beautiful.

I had a friend that got pregnant on vacation in Europe with her husband. They weren't trying so she said she had a lot to drink on the trip. She probably drank during the first two weeks of the pregnancy. Her daughter is an absolute doll- perfect in every way.
Fetal alchol syndrome occurs after long term, excessive drinking. NOT a few drinks early on when you aren't aware you are pregnant yet.

I knew someone that got pregnant that was on the pill and her baby came out perfectly healthy. I also knew someone that had no idea she was pregnant and went out a couple of times drinking an excessive amount of alcohol and her baby was also perfectly healthy. I don't know your friends story completely like how much she was drinking etc. It makes me think of how many people smoked before it became a big thing not to and their babies were born healthy. You just never know. You can do everything right and still that's enough.

My 16 year old niece is a BC baby. My sister was on the pill and never missed one. My niece is perfectly fine and in all advanced classes.

I think everyone in the family has to remember that everything always works out. Right now, what seems like a miserable situation (I know, we had a scare exactly 9 months before our wedding date) will really work itself out! Our plan was to postpone it for a year - but moving it up isnt a bad idea AT ALL! I know lots of people that this happened to and by this time next year - it will be something of the past!
I also know quite a few people who drank not knowing they were pregnant. No problems what so ever!
She should speak to a doctor regarding these fears before making a decision.
Best of Luck to her!

Re: NWR-BC and Pregnancy- LONG
Although I am not a BC baby...my mother was 5 months pregnant with me when her & my father got married and you couldn't even tell...obviously I figured it out after some time when I realized that their anniversay was only 4 months prior to my birthday but I really don't think there is a need to move up the wedding unless she wants to and honestly the BC doesn't affect the baby at all....it amazed me at first to find out that you can get pregnant on the pill and then not know it but still take the bill but my FH is a pharmacist and it doesn't effect the baby. I agree with one of the above posts in the end this is a happy moment and in a year it won't seem like a big deal anymore.

Something like this happened in my exes family. She got preggers, never told the family, she was a little big to begin with, got engaged, secretly got married, continued to planned the whole wedding, went to look at the halls a week before the baby was due, had the baby early due to complications, and showed up at the door step with a baby!!! They were devestated, the family I mean. Ex wouldn't even really talk about it. I showed up the next week with a present for the baby, Ex was totally upset with me for doing that. But you know what, It is a baby, the baby is not to blame, After things died down, the baby was SOOO loved, Spoiled ROTTON by everyone in the family. So even though they are sad now, They will be happy and the baby will light up their life.
As far as the BC, I think it only affects the baby if it is taken for several months while preggers. I also agree that ' I THINK' Fetal acl. Syndrome is from A lot of FREQUENT drinking. But the doctor is the best person to ask before they make and rash desicions.

I guess it is just a crazy time... it is a baby and a baby is nothing to be sad about...i guess it is just the timing- and the fact that the mom was wanting this wedding to be 'just so' because she never had a wedding.....due to her son being born...They all will be excited when the baby is here... I just hope they think rationally!!!!!
Thanks so much! It has been a really weird day with the calls and everything!

Re: NWR-BC and Pregnancy- LONG
MY MOM HAD ME WHILE ON THE PILL...im just fine...i just hope that they look into it a little more ...tell them to talk to their doctor and find out the details on that..drinking is obviously bad but to be honest? how far along is she? i know 2 people that didnt know they were pregnant for like 1-3 months and were big partiers..and they have BEAUTIFUL healthy children...its not like she is 9 months pregnant and still drinking...this stuff happens all the time..i hope that the grooms mom doesnt have anything to do with their decision..i know it must be nerve wracking but only a doctor can tell you the real deal...and the grandmother should be happier or more worried about the baby than the wedding..i hope this helps

Re: NWR-BC and Pregnancy- LONG
I know MANY people who got pregnant on different forms of birth control and their children were born fine. I also know a girl who did not know she was pregnant TWICE until she was in the hospital with stomache pains and was actually in labor. Twice - She had her period all the way through, was on birth control the whole time, going out like normal (Im told the baby grew up in her ribs and she is very tall so she didnt really show at all) By the way her name is Tammy Merril if you dont believe me. (I know its a wild story)
I am sure the baby would be fine. I wish them the best of luck. When they see a doctor Im sure the doctor would tell them the same thing.
I also knew girl who got pregnant right after an injury and was on vicodin for a while before she found out and her baby was fine.

Re: NWR-BC and Pregnancy- LONG
back in the day people drank and smoked while having children. nowadays people are more careful and doctors are more conservative. putting my thoughts about the abortion debate aside and not taking that into consideration, i think that the baby will be fine. forget about the wedding- have it a quick ceremony earlier then have the big to-do later on.

Re: NWR-BC and Pregnancy- LONG
My friend got pregnant 2 times while on the birth control and to be perfectly honest, I know of a ton of little ones that their mom's were drinking through the entire first 2 months. It is true, my FH mom drank all the time through the pregnancy and although I DEFINITELY do not recommend it, many people drink because they don't even realize they are pregnant.

Re: NWR-BC and Pregnancy- LONG
It is definately possible to become pregnant while on BC, but it is rare. Last I checked the effective percentage was either 98% or 99% when used correctly. In other words there is a 1%-2% chance of getting pregnant while on the pill even if used correctly. Depo, however, has a much lower percentage of being effective. Again, last I checked it was only 93% effective. I'm not a doctor, but I spent some time in college working as a medical biller for Planned Parenthood. I worked in the front office so I was trained A LOT on BC.

Re: NWR-BC and Pregnancy- LONG
yes!!! My best friend just had a beautiful healthy baby girl and she has been on birth control for like 10 years!!!! also a friend of the family is having a baby in 2 weeks and the baby is perfectly normal
it has become more common these days i would not worry too much unless it was like a couple of months and she was taking it for a while when she was pregnant
