Just got some news that a friend of the family (who is getting married in a few months) is pregnant. The mother of the groom found out yesterday and she is so sad...long story- well this wedding was her dream, basically she was living vicariously through her son and daughter in lae to be- now to find out she is pregnant it is tearing her apart...
They are debating moving the wedding up or having an abortion... she was on birth control and she was drinking ...they are nervous that the baby could have problems because of this...
I will keep my opinions to myself regarding their possible decisions, but my real question, is HAS anyone become pregnant or do you know someone who has become pregnant on birth control...and what possible problems can occur?
Thank you in advance- any advice i can give to them would be great because i am at a loss right now

Re: NWR-BC and Pregnancy- LONG
Firstly, you should encourage your friend to see a doctor ASAP, it may ease alot of her anxiety to talk things over with a professional.
That said, a good friend of mine just had a baby - she continued to menstruate regularly through the first FIVE months she was pregnant and didn't know it (She just thought she was getting heavier) She drank regularly, smoked cigarettes, and ate like crap. She changed everything when she found out, but the baby is perfectly healthy.
I know Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is a scary thing, and it does happen, but you have to drink in the second trimester (I think) for this to affect you.
Your friend sounds more freeeked about the actual pregnancy than the possible health of the baby. Maybe she is using the drinking and BC concerns as a way of subconciously justifying an abortion? Just a thought...

Yes, I'm one of them! I got pregnant on the HM while on Ortho-Tricyclen Lo and continued to take every single pill not knowing that I was PG. Drs said it was not a big deal. Also, being that I was on my HM, of course I was drinking, not knowing that I was PG.
This happens ALL the time. Alcohol consumption during the first few weeks of pg is usually not a big deal (so long as it's not extremely excessive). My drs told me I had nothing to worry about and so far everything is fine with my pregnancy.
If I were in her shoes, I would really consider moving the wedding up.

Also before we got married mike and I talked about what would happen if we got pregnant before the wedding and we said we would probably wait longer,

Ok I really don't think there is too much to worry about. It really depends on how much she drinks and how often but if she if she just got pregnant I don't think she has much to worry about. I had a lady that I worked with that she drank and then she found out she was pregnant the doctor told her and I have heard this myself that its really most important when the baby's organs are developing. As far as the birth control it happens all the time. I really don't think it is much concern so long as she stopped as soon as she found out. The doctor will be able to tell her everything.
Hope this helps

What is it with orthotricyclin? I know so many people who were on it and became PG. I stay away from that one. I wouldn't be to worried about the drinking, there are so many people that do not know they are PG and drink. It is excessive use of alcohol that is correlated with FAS. Use of the pill and pregnancy is also OK in the beginning. The Doctor knows best, your friend needs to go and hear it from them.

Wow. I know i am going to get comments here...and this is no offense to you, i know you were asking an honest question on behalf of your friend....but when i read 'move the wedding up' or 'have an abortion' my heart kind of dropped.
Nothing is completely foolproof when a pregnancy is involved. They say birth control has no interference on a healthy baby...once the baby is conceived, the BC pills don't affect a thing. Neither will drinking so early in the pregnancy..its in the crucial later months of development.
I think your friend has more to think about if she would just have an abortion to have her dream wedding or b/c there 'might be some problems' OR because the mother of the groom wants that. Yes its her decision...but maybe i'm alone here, just seemed awfully sad to me. If i were to become pregnant now i would deal with a smaller scale wedding or pushing it back..the baby would be priority. Just my opinion. If i misunderstood antything i apologize.

I completely agree- I didnt want to even bring up my own opinions her choices because it is a touchy subject and I do not agree with them either...however I just wanted to know about the dangers and thankfully many have said that they dont believe there are too many! There is still no decision made yet....but a lot of discussion

Hi... your friend has alot of thinking to do.
My comments:
God has blessed your friend with a child at this moment for a reason.
There are so many people out there who WISH they could have a child but can not.. She needs to realize that she was blessed for a reason at this time.
She can still have the wedding of her dreams in a couple of months as planned or after the baby is born.
You said that her wedding is in a couple of months... so she should have had everthing already planned i am assumming.
In a couple of months she will not be showing all tha much so she SHOULD be fine.
As for the for the future MIL ('THE WEDDING WAS HER DREAM' ... NO COMMENT!!
LIFE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAT A WEDDING THAT WILL ONLY BE FOR FOUR HOURS!!

Re: NWR-BC and Pregnancy- LONG
Im pregnant with a BC baby right now...
Totally unplanned and before my wedding day...When I first found out I panicked thought the same thing... Move up the wedding...skip the wedding all together... So many thoughts race through your mind...
Aside from getting the most shocking news of your life..your hormones are going crazy making it that much harder to think rationally...
I literally didnt tell anyone my decsions about my wedding... didnt even let out a thought until I decided what I wanted... then I presented to them like THIS IS HOW ITS GOING TO BE!
I was lucky...everyone was so excited about the baby they wouldve given me whatever I wanted!!
As far as the birthcontrol goes...since she was only taking it for a short time after conception everything will be fine...When I asked my DR about the being on BC thing...he wasnt even concerned... Tell her to talk to her DR he will let her know how serious her concerns are..
What Im trying to say is.... Tell her not to make any decsions to fast...Tell her to take time to herself and decide what she wants...all emotions aside... The hardest thing to realize is that you can still pursue all your dreams and still have all the joys of becoming a mother!!!
TRUST ME IM FINDING THESE THINGS OUT EVERYDAY... Goodluck!!!

Re: NWR-BC and Pregnancy- LONG
I just wanna add one more thing:
The most important thing I realized through out this whole thing... is no matter what desicion she makes...she will NEVER satisfy everyone...
She'll always have one person saying well she shouldnt go through with the wedding..
One saying she shouldnt go through with the pregnancy...
In life you are never able to satisfy everyone..thats just how it is...So take care of yourself! Fh and I decided we wanted this baby more than anything and we still wanted our big beautiful wedding... our comment to those who disagreed....
If you dont like it you dont need to be a part of our childs life, and you need not come to our wedding... If you not there to share our joy THEN STAY HOME!
