I went to an outdoor event Thurs night and wore a dress and strappy wedges. I knew the bugs were biting, but yesterday I counted 19 bug bites (most from the knee down, but on my arms and back too).
I had a really mild case of the chicken pox (just one on my shoulder) so i'm not used to dealing with these and i want to scratch so badly!!!
what can I do? should I put ice on them? calamine lotion? I'm dyinggggggg

Re: NWR: best homemade cure for bugbites?
I always get bitten up horribly to the point that I carry bug spray in the summer lol. I am allergic so I always ice them first to bring down the swelling and then I put that bug bite stick on them...you can get it at any drugstore and I think it works the best

I ice it down, then I just put rubbing alcohol on them. It immediately dries it out the the itching becomes less severe!

I can totally relate .. sorry
I have bug bites all over... it doesn't take an outdoor event for me to get bit I get bit indoors too Don't ask
I find that Spray benadryl works wonders - spray on everytime you feel the itch. I carry bug spray in my purse at all times. I like Burt Bees, or Off tropical scent along with the spray benadryl b./c I swell like a Matha F *er
Also a good Home remedy I learned in Mexico is buying homemade Lemon and or Lime soap which can be purchased at Esty.com or HERE

OMG, I'm the same way! And, I've never seen so many HUGE mosquitos as I have this year. I freak when I see them because I get such a bad reaction when I get bit. I get such huge welts that leave a mark. I try so hard not to scratch them.
I read that you should wash the area with soap and water...do not scratch. It has something to do with chemicals they release in their saliva, so when you scratch and that gets under your skin that's why you get a hive/reaction. The best thing for me if I get bit that badly is to take Benadryl. My FH always loved the spray too. When I was little my mother used to always say white vinegar and calamine lotion helped. I remember reading something else too about it having more to do with your own chemistry and something to do with low magesium levels. Several years ago I had a HUGE mosquito in my room almost through Nov that was eating me alive at night...I saw it once and missed it when I tried to kill it! I was like you Jen (bluegreen)...I had about 20 bites at a time. The only thing that finally helped me was taking a magnesium supplement! Another thing I read about to avoid bites is geranium oil. It's like pure torture to me when I get bites like that and itch so badly. Gemmifer, thanks for the other tips too...I'll have to make note of that site!

Re: NWR: best homemade cure for bugbites?
The worst is that ive had to go in to the doctor for some bites bc of how bad it was. One bit i had turned black and blue and was larger than a golf ball. The same day i was biten, within a few hours it got so large and was getting worse. I started getting scared because my arm was getting numb and i wasn't feeling well, i started feeling light headed and getting sweaty. I went to the doctor quickly and they took my temperature so i even had a high fever. The doctor said he doesnt know what exactly bit me but hes never seen a bite quite like that. It was so bad that not only did i get a shot but i had to take 7-10 pills a day for 2 weeks, guess it was poisonous, and dont know how the F*CK that happened, funny thing is that its happened to me more than once. Whatever it was had to be big too bc you can see the 2 spots on my arm where it bit me and each one was pretty big

oh yeah it definitely wasn't a mosquito...My only guess is maybe some type of spider. I always get bad reactions from spider bites. Infact alot of times when ppl think they have a mosquito bite bc of how irritated it got, its usually a spider bit but they just assume its a mosquito

You know what, you're right...that's probably what it was. Come to think of it, I think it was last winter or before, I must have had one. This guy that used to work in my office knows how I am with insect bites and would laugh at me. Well, when I showed him this bite...I think it was on my finger no less...he couldn't believe after so many days what a welt I had. And, that's what he said...it was probably a spider bite! This other man I worked with had a bite on his toe that was like yours. I didn't see, but I heard he was walking around with his shoe off...ha!

ugh I have one right now that blew up, it started a tiny bug bite and is now the size of a half dollar! FH was so scared by it he ran out and got me benadryl (in cream form) so i used that but for itchiness the absolute best thing I ever used was the aveeno anti itch cream! It's a god sent

Is it really? I almost got it once, but I think when I compared it to the Benadryl there was something not in the Aveno and the Benadryl was stronger or somethink like that. I have to try the Aveno next time. If I feel like I have an itch, I try to remember not to scratch and wash it right away. It has seemed to help not get such a huge welt. If I get like that, I take the Benadryl tablet now...that has seemed to clear it up the fastest.

Adolf's meat tenderizer add a little water to it to prevent a cake like solution and then apply. It definitely stings but takes the itch out.
