I just called Planned Parenthood to ask them about BC, since I dont have insurance. The receptionist told me the consultation w/ a 6 month supply of BC would be $40..and any addition packs are $20, not bad at all. In any case, what I would like to know is what r the side effects? Here is why I ask. I have been to the Dr. before and I have had a high white blood count(Dr. suspected Lukemeia, but I did the bone marrow test and it came out neg.), Ive had skin and blood in my urine twice..then the third time it came out fine (dr. thought it was probably skin from my vagina..sorry if TMI), I also have WPW syndrome (which is an electrial current in the heart that makes it beat a bit quicker..something like that, the Dr. told me the worst that can come of this is that I faint..which has never happened to me in my 24yrs of life), I also have a small heart mur mur, thats all I can think about right now..I have heart that BC can cause blot clots...my mom is worried, especially since I have no insurance..what do you girls think?

Re: NWR- Birth control..
I went to planned parenthood last week. They charged me 150 for the visit. And it was 25 to 50 a month for the pill. Depending which one I wanted. I got there they would not give me the pill. But still charged the 150

Re: NWR- Birth control..
ive been on bc for 8 yrs now and i was fully aware of all the side effects....clots....stroke....heart attack....and smaller ones....migraines (which i was victim of)....lower libido.....gaining weight...etc. i did it for so long out of convenience and it helped my irregular period...but i will be coming off of them right after the honeymoon and not bc i want to become pregnant...i just dont wanna put myself at risk anymore....some ppl will tell u that u can use these pills for the rest of ur life but IMO we dont know what these pills are really capable of until we wait long term read up on ur brand/pill of choice before making ur decision...HTH

Re: NWR- Birth control..
When you go there are you meeting with a doctor? When I first went on BC the doctor asked me health questions kind of like a screening to determine wether or not I could go on it. I am sure if you tell them your health history they will determine if and what type of BC is right for you.

Re: NWR- Birth control..
if you give the dr your medical history he/she should be able to inform you if they are too high risk

I would make sure a Dr. sees you and your medical history before you get on the pill!!

Re: NWR- Birth control..
they'll most likely have a nurse practicioner see you and take a full medical history and do an exam, so they're not gonna give it to you if they think you're at risk for something bad. if it'll make you feel more comfortable, i'd call them again asking if you can see a dr. and then explain your reasons to them. but they're not gonna just give you a pill and send you out w/o even looking at you, so don't worry about that.

Whoa..where did you go? The lady told me it would be $155 if I wanted an entire test including HIV testing, STD testing and a pap smear..or I could just go with the $40 consultation and 6mth suppy of BC

Re: NWR- Birth control..
If it were I...I would not take the chance...I didn't have any of those things you had...and I still developed clots...granted, I smoke (I know, bad Alli) which could have been a factor, but the pill really messes up your system....with that being said I am going back on it (Doc said it was ok!) just for the honeymoon...no honeymoon baby for me thank you very much...
If you do go, I would make sure that they did all testing on you before they put you on it...even though it costs more, it will be safer in the long run!

Re: NWR- Birth control..
from what i understand, the blood clot risk is very low, but does increase if you're over 35 and if you smoke.... i would check with your doctor due to your past history... but you might not have any side effects. most women don't/.

Re: NWR- Birth control..
i would hope that when you go to planned parenthood you can talk to a doctor who is educated and can answer your questions/concerns.
i have a slight mur mur and heart palpitations occasionally, and im on BCP. i also have a disability which limits my mobility slightly and my dr did not seemed concerned at all about the blood clot issue since im mobile for a majority of the day. she said we would have to reevaluate it if i was like not mobile at all or bed ridden or something more extreme like that. not that that part pertains to you specifically.
BTW, blood in the urine sounds like a UTI.
would DEFINITELY recommend asking about low dose BC. thats what im on.
you just need to weigh whether its worth it to you, if you think youll be really worried about it all of the time, its not worth it for you.

When you go to planned parenthood you will see a doctor. Just be sure to tell them about your history. If they do not think it is safe for you, then they will not put you on it.
ETA: Everyone's side effects are different, so its best to talk to the doctor.

The price they charge is dependent on income.

Hey Sweetie, First, I understand that you don't have insurance, however with all your past medical history, i would recommend you see a physician (ob/gyn). Side effects of birth control include deep venous thrombosis (blood clots) however those at increased risk I anyone with blood disorders that make them hypercoaguable (thick blood), and patients over age of 35 who smoke (as you hear on TV). WPW is pretty aymptomatic in and of itself, I agree, however if say you have an increased risk of being hypercoaguable (hereditary, cancer, immobiliation) and say have a change in cardiac rhythm to say atrial fibrillation, then you would put yourself at an increase risk of having a developing clot embolize and for instance lead to stroke or pulmonary embolus. I am not trying to terrify you, because generally BCPs are extremely effective and have a low probability of morbidity and mortality in the general population. However these are just hings that one should be aware of and why its good to have a physician clear you prior to beginning oral contraceptives.
Hope this is helpful

Re: NWR- Birth control..
my only other suggestion would be to contact any of the doctors youve worked with for the few issues you mentioned and to ask their medical opinion on you starting the pill, since they know your history. i dunno, just an idea. i asked my neuro her opinion before hand and she shed some light on it.

Re: NWR- Birth control..
I would suggest seeing a doctor and giving him your whole medical history. Planned Parenthood usually sets you up with a Nurse Practitioner, so when you go back make sure to mention to them some of your conditions and insist on seeing a doctor. The doctor should be able to determine if it is safe for you to go on BC and what type--there are many types out there so they should be able to prescribe one for you. Is it also possible for you to maybe apply for Medicare/Medicaid--ordinarily if you are a student, they will allow that and community hospitals will be able to see you.
