Hi, I am in desperate need of social lessons for Kindergarten and 1st grade. I travel from room to room and have to beg, borrow and buy all books and materials. Plus carry them around.
I see these kids once a week and their behavior isn't that great because they look to me more like a visitor.
I need some great lessons that are age/grade appropriate and that can hold their attention.
My lessons so far have been a bit difficult. I have searched high and low on the internet, but most lessons take several days to do or require a lot of materials.
Can anyone help??????
Thanks so much!

Re: NWR: Calling all teachers
Social lessons...not sure what you mean. Do you mean social skills lessons? Are you a counselor or social worker? Or do you mean social studies?

I teach 1st grade. You could do a lesson on communities. They can compare/contrast city and country and illustrate a picture on costruction paper. They can make shoe box diorams. You can have them make puppets on important people in a community (police, firemen, etc) My kids loved that. Hope this helps!

Re: NWR: Calling all teachers
Hi, I started one on the community with the 1st grade. I had the kids paste pictures of where they live and shop etc. Some of my kids are special ed too. The problem is that they couldn't read the worksheet I made for them to paste the pictures on. I even put it in single, big words.
I read another book about a girl walking around NYC and she talked about what she saw and heard.
So I had them make a book of their 5 senses. What do they see when they walk through their neighborhood, what do they smell etc..... They are almost done with that, but now I am not sure of I should move into Thanksgiving lessons.
Do you read a book first? If so, what a good one on community helpers/heros?
Puppets???Hmmmmm. Made out of material ? Paper? Sounds good.
Do you work for the city or LI? The other problem is that want me to adhere to a workshop model that is ridiculus for K.
Thanks for the help!

Re: NWR: Calling all teachers
I joined Lessonplanet.com, and I have found some really great lesson plans on there that are perfect for when I have to cover a class. I use them frequently, often altering the lessons to suite my teaching style or the needs of my students. It was like $25 for the year, but so far it's been well worth it.

I work in Brooklyn. I can't think of the books i used, but i went to the library and got a few. I had these material puppets, but they could also make one using paper bags. I think you could def start thanksgiving lessons this week.

Re: NWR: Calling all teachers
We actually took a walk around our own school and then talked about who we saw. In first grade, our kids wrote about who/what they saw. In kindergarten, I know the teachers are having a simple worksheet and then they have 6-8 boxes inside of a house outline. The kids drew who was in their house, one person to each box. If you collect it the next day you can label and reteach the idea of nuclear families etc., they can copy the names of the people from your easel. TEACH MODEL DO.. THERE
