If you want something low key, I love Narita in Forest Hills or Planet Thailand in Williamsburgh (BK/Queens border). Somethin' fancier, try Nobu or Megu.. both in the city.

Narita: 10708 70th Rd, Forest Hills, NY

Planet Thai: 141 N 7th Street, Williamsburgh, NY

Nobu: two locations one downtown and one midtown (I actually like the food/service in midtown better for some reason)

Megu: 62 Thomas Street, New York NY

I like the midtown Nobu better (Nobu 57) also....don't know why, I just always seem to have a better night there. It's on 57th btwn 5th and 6th.

Yeah I feel like the one downtown (even though it's the original) is a bit over rated!

Call me crazy but for sushi I think Nobu is mediocre at best. I think it's best for the tasting menu of real delights. The sushi course is meh. Of course the scene is fab. I also think Haru is just ok, it's good for the buzz and for something easy.

Also if you don't want a big night out but want pieces as big as your hand and top top quality try Yama, there are several locations. Again, not fancy but the sushi rocks.

My favorite place on the Upper East Side lately for an easy bite is Ko on 70th and 2nd. Their sex-on-the-beach roll is to DIE FOR. It's not fancy in any way though, just gooooooood.

Tomoe on Thompson is amazing but be prepared to wait.

And here are the recommendations from New York magazine:
