I have been leasing for years and now FH wants me to buy a car... What should I do?

Re: NWR - CAR
i am the proud OWNER of a 1997 mercury sable...with bubbling paint and an engine light that stays on all the time.
FH owns his car too - he bought it on a 0% financing smart buy thingy a couple years ago.

I say buy. In the end you come out with something of your own, after paying off a lease for 3 years where did your money go? You don't come out with anything in the end.

Re: NWR - CAR
Look at it this way, are you the type of person that likes a new car every few years? Do you drive a lot? Do you have $$ to put down on a car?
These are all factors that you should think of before you decide. If you are the type that buys something and is happy with it for years to come, then buy. If you drive a lot and have money to put down, again buy.
I know that a couple of my friends, can't afford to put anything down and are on a tight budget, so they lease since it is cheaper. They also get sick of their cars and want something new every couple of years.
IMO, I would only buy. When my car was paid off, it is mine and I don't have to worry about payments anymore until I am ready and not forced to get a new car.

Re: NWR - CAR
I leased my car - and now I own it. So you dont necessarily 'lose' money when you lease. I leased my '03 Jetta in Oct of 2002, and after the 3 yrs was up - I just sent in a check of the remaining balance. I did not pay a penny more than if I would have financed it - it was just the affordable thing for me to do while i was in college.

Re: NWR - CAR
I leased my car and then bought it at the end of the lease. I could not afford a car payment of 500 plus insurance right out of college. (my old car was destroyed when a women backed into me(her fault) in a supermarket parking lot.. that car only had 50000 miles on it. )

Re: NWR - CAR
I bought a brand new sentra in 2001 outright so theres no payments or anything, BEST feeling ever! But I had ALOT of help from the parents of course... When me and dan buy a new car in the future we'll probably end up financing it... It's always nice to own it as opposed to being forced to lease a new car after X amount of years..

Re: NWR - CAR
I would defintiely buy if you can. Someone like myself would probably benefit in leasing because I live in the city and drive really only on weekends. LI people tend to drive all over the place everyday so you wind up going past the mileage per year. good luck!!

Re: NWR - CAR
I am fortunate enough to have wonderful parents who bought me a brand new car my junior year in college- 2002 Honda Civic EX Coupe. They finished paying it off while I was in school and afterwards. It's still in my parents' name, but they will transfer it over to me after I am married- figured it would be easier to do it that way with the name change and all. Once we get married though, FH is gonna 'return' his car and he is going to drive the Civic to the train station (pending on that he gets a good job in NYC) and I will be getting a new leased car! I get too antsy!

Re: NWR - CAR
I always leased untill I met my FH he lives in Bay Ridge Brooklyn. I went over my miles and when I turned in the car I financed a new one. After we are married I might lease a new one. I like getting a new car every 3 years and not having the headache of trying to sell it. Either way is fine I think.

Re: NWR - CAR
I have always liked the idea of a leased car only because you get a new one every few years, however I drive more than the 14000 miles allowed (im not sure how though ) so I bought mine My mom leased her car and then bought out the lease, so did one of my coworkers, so its a nice choice to have.

That totally sux!!! I know the feeling though, I had bought a 1999 Honda Civic 2 door manual and had it for 5 days before some lady decided to pull out onto Pulaski Rd and not look and it got totalled I loved that car (it was FH's friends and I got it so super cheap too cause he was moving. RIP Skippy
