NWR: Commuting to NYC from Suffolk

NWR: Commuting to NYC from Suffolk

Does anybody live in Farmingville and take the Ronkonkoma Line to Manhatten everyday?

If so, is it really bad? How long does it take?

Thanks

My sister lives in Medford and takes the Ronkonkoma line into Manhattan every morning. She's been doing it for 2 years now so it can't be that bad.

The train from Ronkonoma to Penn Station takes roughly 2 hours. give or take 10-15 minutes depending on how many people get on and off at each stop.

I take it everyday from Ronkonkoma. I'm doing it 8 years now. Once I get married I will be going out of Hicksville. Can't wait. Will cut my commute in half.

I think it's more like 1:15 minutes. I've done it a few times and I don't think it's too bad...but I think it is like anything else...there will be good and bad days.

I commute from Jersey and it takes me about an hour. I've gotten used to it by now and live for my magazines and ipod.

How long is the train ride for you?

I take the Ronkonkoma line from Brentwood everyday - that's about 1:10 - 1:20 each way. Ronkonkoma adds about 10-15 mins to the commute - it would take about 1:20 - 1:45 each way from Ronkonkoma.

It's not too bad, sleeping is common and during peak times the trip can be shorter with the express trains. Plus getting on in Ronkonkoma, you almost always get a seat.

check out the LIRR website

I would love that. I live on Staten Island and it takes me 2 hours to get to Manhattan. I live IN one of the five bourough! How silly is that??

I did that exact commute for about 4 years (recently moved around Hicksville w/FH and commuting from there now). If you catch an express train the ride can be just over an hour, other peak trains are usually 1 hour 15 minutes. A non-peak/local train can take an hour and a half.

The good thing about Ronkonkoma is that you're the first stop going there and the last coming home and you don't have to transfer so I would always just find a seat and go to sleep.... although some people use that time to be productive, like read or work on their laptops. I wasn't really bothered by going to work, it was the not being able to get home before 7pm that can be frustrating And if you do end up commuting from there, look into getting a pass to park in the garage, there's usually a waiting list. It's sooo much more convenient in the winter.

I remember taking the train grom Ronkonkama to penn taking about 1hour 15min to 1 hour 30 mins. Not to long. Getting home in rush our ***** though. Try finding a seat!

The Ronkonkoma line runs parallel to Babylon so that's not possible. It would be convenient if we could cross LI like that by train!

Actually I take the Ronkonkoma line all the way from Ronkonkoma when I'm out by my FH. I really like it, but when I'm coming from Farmingdale which is where I live, it takes about the same amount of time to get there as all the other trains. A little under an hour.

I used to commute from Ronkonkoma into Penn station. The ride is about an hr and 15 mins on the express morning train. That train is at 7:20 or so. The ride isn't really that bad. My complaint was the parking. I HATED the parking lot.
I now commute from the Patchogue station which is an hr and 30 mins but I'm always guaranteed a spot and the trains are newer so they're not disgusting like the Ronkonkoma line trains.

I live in Farmingville and I was offered a job in Manhattan but I just didn't want to do that commute! I remember someone saying it was almost 2 hours! I may be wrong though...

I commuted from Islip to Times Square for a while. It was hard, I was exhausted all the time. It was basically 2 hours door to door, though the train portion was 1 15 mins-1 hour and a half. Add four hours onto your day just for the commute--I was taking a 6AM train and leaving at 6PM, getting home at 8PM. An exhausting day, and one minute late for a train can mean waiting for an hour. I make less money working on LI, but my quality of life is just so much better. I am a much happier person.

We just bought a house in Medford and I was planning on taking the Ronkonkoma train.
What don't you like about the parking there? I was all excited because it's free!

Yes, it is free if you park in the huge lot. I personally hated it because you have to park so far away because there are never any close spots. Then when you get home, you sit in traffic waiting to get out of the lot. I saw so many accidents happen when I used to take that train. Just be careful. I would sit in my car and listen to a song or two to avoid the traffic.

oh hmm I didn't know that. I know that whenever I get off at babylon theres always trains that are going further out east. I assumed it was the same going towards the city.
