Any specific suggestions or ideas for a day trip or CHEAP over night trip FH and I can take in Aug? We have no money for a vaca (hm, I wonder why?! lol) but we want to get out of Queens/nyc for at least a day.

Atlantic City is totally doable in a day/overnight trip. There's the boardwalk, beach, casino's (we didn't gamble but it's fun walking around), good food, etc.
Poconos in PA
Another always fun day trip is going to the beach, and maybe you guys can find a nice Inn somewhere near one, and stay the night.

We do AC every couple of months, and he's going there TWICE in August for his bachelor party and his friend's. :(
