NWR: DIFFICULT puzzle, can you figure this out?

Original post by SoVic08

Ok ready?

A certain US state of three syllables, when wedged between two other letters, results in a two-syllable word meaning 'previous, bypast' and 'inevitable, as a conclusion'. When you determine the longer word, take it's first letter.

Now, there are 25 US states with 3 syllables:
Alaska
Arkansas
Delaware
Florida
Hawaii
Idaho
Illinois
Iowa
Kentucky
Maryland
Michigan
Missouri
Montana
Nebraska
Nevada
New Hampshire
New Jersey
Ohio
Oregon
Rhode Island
Tennessee
Virgina
Washington
Wisconsin
Wyoming

Can someone brilliant figure this out? I can't!
