I thought you meant drinking water at first so I went to look at Newsday.

I'm not as familiar with the Nassau beaches as the Suffolk ones but, they seem to be worried about areas that have calmer waters, the ones that don't circulate as much.

Hopefully it will be better by the weekend, they are predicting sun and humidity!

LI gets their water from underground aquifers. NYC gets the water from reservoirs upstate. If something leached into the groundwater at the area in Nassau County (which I think is what happened) then only that area would be contaminated.

right.....
But beach wise it;s sad b/c they're all dirty if you ask me. I took my 4, and 2yr old for their first vist to the beach in the U .S. on father's day, and my daughter was so turned off. She has only visited the beaches out of the country in Jamaica, and Trinidad, so she's like why can't i see my feet mommy. This water is nasty.. I actually felt bad for her

The water is not dirty, its just not the same as in the Carribean and other places like that. There are many more plants and animals and microscopic creatures in the Atlantic. Tropical waters are crystal clear because there are not as many things living in it.

Edited for grammar

Well 'looking' dirty and being dirty are two different things. LI beaches are actually quite clean, and the groundwater is some of the cleanest, purest water you can find anywhere.

water in West Hempstead

MTBE is found in gasoline. There was probably a gas station in the area that had a leak in one of its taks and it leached into the groundwater.

the beaches here are by no means dirty. In fact over the last few years I have watched the water become MUCH cleaner that it ever was when I was growing up.

I don't swim in the ocean here and that practice is now cemented more since we went to the beach in Bermuda. What a difference!

The beaches are definitely clean.

The recent rainfall though has caused high bacteria levels in some of the bodies of water that don't circulate as much as the Sound and the Ocean. More rain is expected this week so that's where the concern lies.

There is no reason not to swim in the ocean here.

And by the way, as far as groundwater goes, keep in mind that all those chemicals people put on their lawns and gardens to keep the weeds out and the bugs out are poisoning it.

Not to mention the stuff people dump down sewer drains. Just yesterday I saw a green puddle (antifreeze) next to a storm drain.

And then there's companies dumping waste into the ocean.

Sorry to be such a pessimist but it's really depressing when you think about it. It's the reason I garden organically, to try to do my part to not further the damage to our environment.

Actually, the turkoise water exists for 2 reasons
1. There are no rivers that empty out into Carribean beach areas...
2. Water is reflecting off the sky which tends to be bluer in tropical areas.

We won't be using THAT water for many years to come. The water we are using now is many thousands of years old. Future generations will have to deal with our disgusting pollution.

State Plans to Sue Exxon Over Underground Oil Spill in Brooklyn

Published: June 22, 2006
New York State environmental officials said yesterday they would sue Exxon Mobil over a big underground oil spill in Brooklyn that is still seeping sticky goo into a city waterway, decades after the leak was first noticed.

An estimated 17 million gallons of petroleum once lay in a vast plume beneath the streets of the Greenpoint neighborhood that was home to many oil refineries for more than a century.

The oil business has largely moved elsewhere, but countless small and large spills went unnoticed for decades and eventually formed a subterranean blob of more than 50 acres.

Authorities have been aware of the problem since 1978. Exxon Mobil accepted responsibility for much of the damage in 1990 and has since pumped some nine million gallons out of the ground.

From the NY Times. Just disgusting, isn't it?
