Re: NWR: dirty water on LI
We get that periodically, when they're flushing the hydrants. In ours, it's rust and it stains clothes in the washing machine too.

LI gets their water from underground aquifers. NYC gets the water from reservoirs upstate. If something leached into the groundwater at the area in Nassau County (which I think is what happened) then only that area would be contaminated.
right..... But beach wise it;s sad b/c they're all dirty if you ask me. I took my 4, and 2yr old for their first vist to the beach in the U .S. on father's day, and my daughter was so turned off. She has only visited the beaches out of the country in Jamaica, and Trinidad, so she's like why can't i see my feet mommy. This water is nasty.. I actually felt bad for her
The water is not dirty, its just not the same as in the Carribean and other places like that. There are many more plants and animals and microscopic creatures in the Atlantic. Tropical waters are crystal clear because there are not as many things living in it.
Edited for grammar
When 'I' said the 'Beach' was dirty I was referring to the beach in general not the water(b/c if I thought the water was dirty I, and my children would not have been in it) Now my daughter saying it was dirty....she was referring to the water b/c she is a 4yr old, and if I were 4,and saw dark green water when I'm used to seeing clear green,or blue water I would say it was dirty too.
Now I may not be up to date w/ all aspects of the beach water around here or out of the country pertaining to whats in it, or which section is clean, or what have you. But as I stated if I thought it was harmful I would not, nor let my children be in it. But thanks for the info that you have added through out this thread

that's exactly right... we have some of the best beaches in the world and they are rated in the top 5 of the world's most beautiful beaches. it's just different from the carribean. my FH can go on and on and explain scientifically why but luckily, i think lauren gave us the summarized version of what he always tells people-- i like the summary better lauren! i wish i could summarize FH sometimes LOL hahaha-- but well said!!

Yes Danielle, I too have commended her for going into detail b/c it seems like she is well informed on the beach water. But I wasn't referring to the water, as I said in one of my previous post. I was referring to the beach, my daughter was referring to the water

Re: NWR: dirty water on LI
NYC's water comes form the hudson river aquifer 70 miles north of the city in Chelsea, NY if your water is contaminated, its probably the pipes in your house/apt. maybe get them fixed. you can probably find this info out form the NYC.gov website, or google.

There was a post on here about this yesterday...
The areas effected are all of West Hempstead, parts of Franklin Square, parts of Garden City South and Cathedrial Gardens. The chemical is called MTBE. The town took a sample on June 23rd and have been flushing the water since yesterday. They're recommending those in that area to use bottle water for cooking, drinking, brushing teeth, etc. Boiling & filtering the water does NOT help. Needless to say...trying to find bottled water last night in town was rediculous... We drove to Garden City Park to buy water. We also immediately signed up for Poland Spring Home Delivery too! To know we've been drinking this for some time is just insane! We also lost two fish because of a recent water change...so last night we had to buy 20 gallons of spring water and redo the tank.
