Hi, I volunteer at a wonderful shelter (featured on a show on animal planet) in SoHo. They sent the volunteers an email last night asking for people to foster a dog as the shelter is currently at capacity. It is a no-kill shelter that rescues highly adoptable animals from the municipal shelters and from kill shelters in the south. Please take a look at their website if you are looking to adopt a dog or a cat. I have worked with all of the dogs (except Valentino as he is new) and they are all wonderful!!
Sorry, also if you have any questions about any of the dogs you see, feel free to FM me!
(PS. the staff and other volunteers all love Alfred. he's very funny and sweet. Big lab mix - mostly lab with his webbed toes and soft mouth. People don't look at him though because he is not the size of a puppy even though he still is one. He REALLY needs a home!)
THANKS!

Re: NWR- Dogs and Cats
Awww I wish I could but I already have my two pups! In fact, the second one is a dog my mom found tied to a tree in Forest Park and rescued. We were fostering her until we found a home, but never did so she's still with us today! I have to say, I love her to bits though! She's the sweetest dog, which surprised me because she was abandoned and because she's a pit bull. They always have such a bad rap.

OMG! Thats horrible!! I don't know why people abandon their pets! But I'm so happy for the happy ending!
We had dogs from puppy mills, horders and recently a dog that its owners were trying sell on the street!

I just sent you an fm! THanks so much for your interest! The dogs on the website are not all the dogs that are there. We get in new dogs every day or so. It looks like the shelter will be able to take in smaller dogs however the larger dogs will need to be put into foster care.
On a side note, there is a dog there named Alfred. He is a favorite of the volunteers and staff alike. Basically he's a loving goofball - big lab mix but people don't want him b/c he's not puppy size. He's pretty much house trained and VERY food motivated which would make it easier to train him. Thanks again!

AWWW, I wish I could foster a dog. But my poodle is afraid of every dog he meets!
I think it's wonderful that you volunteer at a no kill shelter. I wish there were more shelters like that around here. It's so sad that animals get put to sleep because there is no room for them in the shelter or because they cannot find a home in a timely manner. It breaks my heart to pieces

Re: NWR- Dogs and Cats
What I like about this shelter is that they adopt from kill shelters in Georgia and Mississippi that were inundated with puppy mill dogs and, believe it or not, still hurricane Katrina dogs. We had a bunch of them about two weeks ago from there.
It is sad. The Humane Society estimates that there are about 6-8 million cats and dogs entering shelters each year and of that, 3-4 million are euthanized.
