NWR: Dress code change at my office!!!

okay so we are just having a going away party in our conference room for one of the women th'ats been here 18 years.... The vice president comes in and makes an announcement..... effective Monday no more tank tops, capris (even dress capris), jeans, t-shirt type shirts & open toed shoes (even heels)!!!

Even one is like *** where did this come from - it was always no jeans and sneakers (except fridays) but now everything else is finished too. And fridays are no longer dress down!

Are they going to give us raises to go buy suits?

No, nothing else was said. I know we have had alot of clients in lately, but they come in, in casual clothes half the time because we are casual.

What makes it worse is all of my cute heels hurt my feet, anyone know where I can get nices comfy ones without cleaning out my bank account?

Re: NWR: Dress code change at my office!!!

I had a change like this in my last office. The reason they had to implement it was that certain people were abusing the 'career casual' policy. One girl wore a Rangers jersey and knit leggings to work just about once a week and another was coming to work in graphic tees and faded jeans. Not professional at all. So we implemented a full career dress policy. It loosened up a little once people were back on the right track... but it DEFINITELY s*cked for a while there! And it was bad for the people who didn't abuse the casual policy .. it was like - why are WE being punished for the bad common sense of a few? *sigh*

ETA - The open toe shoe thing IS weird though... do you work in a place where open toes can be construed as a hazard to your safety?

Me too in the summer! It's so weird they didn't give you much explanation or give people much notice.

Where do you work?

I work for NS-LIJ, so technically open toed shoes and shoes without socks or stockings are not allowed, but since we are not actually AT a hospital, we all can get away with it....

ETA: If the CEO or big wig is ever coming to the office, we have to go home and change our shoes!

Re: NWR: Dress code change at my office!!!

Usually something like that means that someone's abusing the policy... I'm scared that's going to happen here because there are some people that dress rather frumpily. I am guilty of leaving my flip flops on occasionally (and it's a no-no, even on Friday but, you can wear open toed shoes any day and sneakers and sweatshirts on Friday but, no flip flops).

Re: NWR: Dress code change at my office!!!

We have never been allowed to wear any of the things you listed, except for the open toed shoes, they're ok. But they have to be shoes, not flip flops.

In a professional office, I think it's justified, especially when there are guests. But Fridays too? I would hate giving that up. Right now, we have casual Thursdays too as a part of a fundraiser for someone who's going through a rough time.

I hope I don't get flak for this, it's no personal indictment against anyone, honestly. I just don't think t-shirts and tank tops illustrate a professional atmosphere. And yes, people are more apt to abuse it. We had someone in one of our offices who would wear the most horrid, tight fitting, cleavage showing things. The dress code was constantly being revised dependant on what she showed up in each week! It's like they ENJOY pushing boundaries and ruining it for others.

But if you work in a non-professional place that isn't an office, I don't think it should be that restrictive!

I FEEL YOUR PAIN.......SAME IN MY OFFICE.... YET WE GET SOME THAT COME IN HOW THEY FEEL WITH NOTHING BEING SAID.......STUPID....DRESS CAPRIS AS LONG AS THEY ARE NEAR THE ANKLE..... NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE NO SLEEVE SHIRTS... EVEN IF THEY ARE DRESS......

THAT S U C K S !!!!!! I would be SO upset because it's not really the dressing up that's the worst part it's the: going from dressing casually and being used to that to all of a sudden having to dress up! In my office it's so relaxed it's not even funny... people wear jeans, t-shirts, flip flops, etc everyday of the week. Even my boss wears flip flops and believe it or not, it looks fine! Everyone always looks good. Maybe someone at your company dressed too revealing or something and all of a sudden they cracked down? Otherwise, this coming out of nowhere is very strange! I'm so sorry!!!

Re: NWR: Dress code change at my office!!!

Something similar happened last year at my office. For the past 10 years I was able to wear my jeans to work then out of the blue without explanation, they changed it. Jeans were only allowed on Fridays. They tried this a few times before and no one listened, but now, more people listened.

It really ***** in my place because I work in the office area up front and in the back its a warehouse and people come up front wearing tiny little shorts or there's a woman that works up front and the majority of the time, she's dressed like a whore, but that's ok

It just ***** a$$.

WOW!!!

Something like that happened at my old job...

It was always company policy, but the JFK office was the exception... Until upper management came in from TX and changed it...

We went a long with it for a little while, but it only last a few months.

Seriously, I buy Naturalizer shoes at DSW. Some of them aren't too bad.
