NWR: First Apartment

Hello ladies. So FH and I are planning on looking for our first apartment come October (provided our finances are in order ). I thought I would ask if any one has any suggestions on things you need for your first place that you didn't realize until you moved in!

I know that I am going to need at least the basics in the kitchen, some furniture to fill it, etc.

I thought you ladies might be able to provide some insight! TIA!

cleaning supplies!! its something that you dont really think about when packing, but as soon as you are there, you need it!!

a bottle opener!!! the first night after we were all moved in, everything was put away and finally got to sit down and relax, I wanted to have some wine and he wanted a beer (and it wasn't twist off) and we didn't have means to open either one! lol

Here is a link to a checklist I found...

hmmm something that I wish I had when we moved in was food. Sounds weird, but we were living off fast food for a week and we felt soooo fat and gross!

Something else that I love, but you don't need right away is this thing called a griddler from cuisinart. We use it as our BBQ since we're living in a city and don't have a yard. You can also switch the plates and make pancakes, eggs, etc on it. Its prob my fav thing in my apt!

For the first few days, the most important things we noticed we needed were:

Cleaning supplies
Paper towels
Paper / plastic cups, plates, utensils (you won't want to be washing dishes)
Duct Tape
Scotch tape
Stapler
Sharpie markers
Toilet paper!
Plastic bags
Zip-loc bags

ETA: I forgot:

Hammer
Screwdriver
Nails
Screws
Pliers

everything... lol

yoy think you have alot of stuff now but once you move into your first place, you see just how empty it is! DH & I lived at stored for like the entire first month....

I suggest just going to walmart/target and going up and down each aisle... guaranteed you'll need something from every aisle... sad bc its a wholeeee lot of $$ in the very beginning and it gets tiring after about the first week, but you'll get through it...

Sounds like something obvious but when you first move in you'll need food and cleaning products.
Youll be starving from setting things up and not having food shopped so youll probably live off of take out for a week

Any cleaning products b/c you cant move in with out cleaning first!

the best recommendation i can give it to force your FH to set up the bed first.

my wonderful FH decided to set up his computer first, & we ended up having to stay up until 2am to finish setting up the bed. i was so damn exhausted at that time.

also if you have to paint, don't move anything in until after. its a pain in the neck to paint around furniture.

I think the thing that surprised me most was that I didn't own scissors! They were just always in the kitchen drawer in my house. I had no idea I actually needed to buy them!

Seriously: scissors, bandaids, cleaning stuff, paper towels, sheets, towels, extension cords, curtain rods.....

we forgot this, then when I went to shower, i realized there was not a curtan there, not even a curtain rod! we had to run out to get both!

TOILET PAPER!!!!!! Thank goodness my dad made me take some before we were all moved in...it would have been terrible to have to use the bathroom and mid-pee realize I had nothing to wipe with!!

OMG...i was without a shower curtain for days, it was not good. My MIL then brought rings, curtain and liner for us until I could get my own.
This is a MUST!!!

Lamps!!! I didn't realize until the day that I moved into my first apt. that the bedroom had no lights in it! I had always been there during the day and never noticed, then that night, the sun went down and I couldn't do anything in my bedroom because I had no light! Make sure you check which rooms have light fixtures and which ones don't :)
