Anyone have problems flying? Besides the normal jitters? I have bad sinus problems and get frequent sinus infections that cause vertigo, as well as problems w/ my inner ear which also causes vertigo. I have not been on a plane since I was 8, but am nervous that I will have pain in my ears, vertigo, etc. I know I can take some meds before for vertigo, but how about problems w/ ears? Anyone else have this difficulty? The fear of ear pain has been keeping me off of airplanes for years.

Problem with your ears popping - chew gum and pinch your nose together and pretend you are blowing your nose as hard as possible.
That helps to unpop them. Start doing that as you descend

chew gum and put cotton in your ears.

I get terrible pain in my ears when I fly. It hurts so much that I want to cry. My doctor suggesting taking Advil and it actually worked. Despite the fact that this sounds like a commercial for avdil, its true and it did work. You should take it 1/2 an hour before landing. It still hurt just not as much. I don't know what to do about the clogged ears, my ears stay clogged for about 2 days. I tried the gun chewing, the earplane ear plugs and holding my nose and blowing (this made my eyes hurt) and nothing really worked.

Matt has bad sinus problems and he is always fine on the plane. I have bad ears and yes they do pop and hurt a little. Chewing gum or eating something helps. Take meds with you and take them if you need them. You will be fine, only a 1hr 88min flight.

Talk with your Doctor. I bet their is something for you to take before you fly.

I didn't realize that your flight was so short. I usually get the intense pain when I go on long flights of 8+ hours. For short flights the pain isn't too bad and the gum helps a lot. I would chew gum and take some type of pain reliever 1/2 hour before landing.

I know.. Just nervous. I have no plans to fly yet, but it's good to know just in case.
BTW: My sister had bad probs w/ her ears...really bad. She went to a doctor and the doctor said chewing gum could actually make it worse. I understand the logic behind it, but I guess it depends on what your problem is.

I suffer from vertigo, sometimes so severe I can't get out of bed. For flying I take a decongestant 1/2 hour before take off and landing.

Re: NWR-flying & sinus problems/vertigo
i was told NEVER to hold nose and blow to pop ears..bc puts more pressure on ears and can cause vertigo in people who have chronic sinus probs like me.
i swear this is the best best thing for flying... sudafed 1 hour before take off..and get these earplugs called earplanes... they are blue and look like little rubber screws.... they masssssively help equalize ear pressure for take off and landing and for nervous people like me as well..... helps get rid of noise of the plane which makes me more anxious.
you can get earplanes at cvs or walgreens..they are the freakin bomb
check you fms too please :)

Ugh....I had terrible sinus problems on just a few flights...literally thought my head was going to explode....awful pain in my head that literally made me cry. Was terrified - did not know what was happening to me. Felt like the worst migraine imaginable. Went to an ENT and turns out I had severe chronic sinusitis.....had sinus surgery and it is the best thing I've ever done. Go get yourself checked out...it is so worth it if you need it! Haven't had a problem with my sinuses since!

Re: NWR-flying & sinus problems/vertigo
Whatever you do - don't chew gum... I wanted to jump out of the plane... and I'm the sister your referenced (LOL). I find yawning helps - but I hate to say it kid... the deviated septum surgery helped. I used to cry the pain would be so bad... again... try taking an antihistamine (dry the sinuses) and advil (anti-inflamatory). I know it's a short flight, but so was Bermuda - do you remember me hysterical crying my eyes out on the plane? You may not have a problem though... it's unfortunate that there is no way to tell unless you actually go through with it... no gum! Oh and lots and lots and lots (did I say lots) of WATER... between the antihistamine and the recycled plane air, your bound to dehydrate!! Also be aware of holding your nose and blowing out... you can cause a blood vessel to blow... give yourself a stroke yet kid... That's not a good idea although I have done it in emergency's. Yawning seems to help so the antihistamine can make you nice and sleepy! Surgery *****! but it's the only true 'cure'... but see if you even have the problem first... and ENT won't be able to really tell until you come in right after flying like I did. That pressurized room they put you in to test it did nothing for me. If you get off the plane and have the problem get to a doc for Prednisone.
