NWR: For All You Teachers Out There....

I am considering getting my Master's in Elementary Education (hopefully with a bilingual extension). Can anyone offer any advice, schools to look at, share their epxperiences, offer any words of wisdom and dos and don'ts? I want to work as an ESL teacher on LI - thanks!

The only advice I can think of now is select a school that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I got my master's at NYU right after college and have loans up the wazoo! I thought where you got your master's was important, but it's really not. I know that Hunter College is a pretty good school for education and it's part of the CUNY system. If you do anything with bilingual education, you are guaranteed a job just about anywhere! Good luck and feel free to ask anymore questions!

I dont recommend Dowling. They cost a fortune and are constantly raising their prices. I have 3 more classes to go, and I cant wait to get out of there!

I got my Master's in Elementary/Special Education from Hofstra and I thought the program was really good. I looked into the teaching programs at Adelphi, Dowling and CW Post, and thought Hofstra had the best program.

Given our budget, it looks as though it will have to be public - either Hunter, Queens College, or Stony Brook - 2 are city schools and one is a state school. Anyone ever heard of CCNY being good? I know back in the day it was supposed to rock, but has gone downhill....

Right now I'm starting my masters in special ed at c.w post. You should look into scholoarships and other sorts of aide.I think that you need to look into all types of schools, {dowling, five towns college, boces, c.w post etc..} Dual Language is very beneficial espically because spanish is the largest minority in the U. You should definitley look into scholarships. There is such a high demand for bilingual ESL teachers, you will probably be able to get $$.

I just finished my Masters in El Ed from Pace University in the city. It's a private school, so it was expensive but the program was very good. Now I have to find a job!

I am getting my masters at CW Post (for School Counseling) and I also work there part-time. Although their education programs are well respected, I think you can get the same quality of education at a state school. I went to Stonybrook for my undergrad and I would've gone back for my masters if they offered my program. This year at Post, the graduate student tuition is $612/ per credit! That's almost $2,000 a class!!!! I am going to be crying when I have to start paying my student loans!!!

Yikes! Matriculated students pay like $185 per credit per semester! At CUNY I mean. And if I have to go to school full time for student teaching etc....we're gonna need all the $$ we can get!

Some of my colleagues got their master's at Queens College recently. The only complaint they had was that there was a lot of work there. I would defintiely do the public school route - it's the cheapest way and the education is pretty good.

I am not a teacher but a bunch of my good friends who are-go to CW POST for their MASTERS and they like it. It's $$$$$ though but what school isn't???? good luck! sorry I can't be of more help!

I did not know there were so many teachers out there WOW. I am applying to the program at Stern, a friend of mine passed some info on to me about the application process, I cannot wait to begin it all. I feel like I am wasting away in Corporate America. I cannot wait to do something that affects people. I think that is why I volunteer so much to make up for my short fall in my career. I wish you all the best ladies.

I got my Masters in Special Ed. at St. John's University. It was great, but not cheap.
I know they have elementary ed.

You're right, Shamma, you definitely affect people through teaching. Teaching is so rewarding, though there are times you question this career choice. I recently got a call from one of my former high school studens who is a junior in college and we may get together for coffee and catch up on things. That's really neat. Also, my students keep on asking me about wedding details - some do it so they don't have to do class work, but others are genuinely interested. I'll be going to a sweet 16 birthday party for one of my students in a couple of weeks. Needless to say, it feels so good to know that these students think so highly you as their teacher.

i got my master's in elem. ed. at teachers college, columbia univ. if you are gonna end up paying the big bucks, i suggest you look there or at bank street (i have a friend who did bilingual extension at TC and loved it).

also, you should look into the philosophies of education of the schools you apply to. believe it or not, they can vary a lot (and as i see it, some are MUCH better than others!).
