FH and I have been on the hunt for the perfect place to live and although we are still looking at a few areas on LI, I really loved Forest Hills! FH works in Manhattan and I teach in Garden City so the commute is pretty equal - I can take the train if I have to. We just figured that for right now while we're still young is the time to live in that atmosphere before we buy something and start planning to have a family.
Does anyone live there or have any experience with the area that they can share!? I would like to be somewhat close to Austin Blvd so we can walk to all the bars/restaurants but I'm not sure how the area is. I also wanna be sure it's a safe place for the nights that FH has to work late and Im alone because I'm a big baby
Any thoughts would be much appreciated! Thanks!!

NWR: FOREST HILLS? - Long Island Weddings
My FH and I live in Birchwood Towers. Parking is a pain at times. But other than that we love it. We also have a garage spot. Our building is one of the nicer ones in the area. We are about a 10 min. walk from Austin Street and go to the NYSC there which is HUGE I might add. The food in the area is wonderful and it's a really nice place to live. We both work in midtown and enjoy the train ride to/from work. It's really a great place to live.

I'm in Forest Hills! I'm about 8 blocks away from Austin Street.
It's generally safe but like anywhere else, not guaranteed 100% safety. A neighbor was robbed last summer but police were on it ASAP. The burglar was definitely watching this neighbor though. She was a widow who stayed with her daughters on the weekend. So that's no coincidence. Luckily it never happened again. We did have someone who attacked someone on three different nights. They eventually caught the guy. I was shocked at each of these incidents because our area in Forest Hills is really nice. I promise you it's otherwise a safe neighborhood! There is a bus on Austin (Q23) that can take you through the neighborhood if you're not comfortable walking. I get home late (12:30-1 AM most nights) and am comfortable walking.

This, definitely expensive, especially the houses in the gardens (I think that's what its called) but it is totally a great atmosphere with tons of things to do, like walk to your local cheese store and bring home stuff to make for dinner, just totally an awesome way of life compared to LI! A lot of walking like the city but yet not as noisy. I like it there.

I was born and raised in Middle Village, which is next to Forest Hills (and a little more suburban). Its really a lovely area! It's generally very safe, and yes the apts can be a bit pricey. IF cost is an issue, Rego Park borders Forest Hills. There's an area there called the crescents which is also beautiful and likely a bit cheaper. However, you would not be as close to the train and it isn't AS nice, but something to think about. The parking situation can't be sugarcoated, it's a absolute nightmare. I often pass on a restaurant I want to go to because I don't want to deal with parking. I would highly recommend renting a space. I feel like you could drive around for hours looking for a spot if you're right around Austin St.

Middle Village (I went to HS at Christ the King! Where'd you go?) is great and more adorable BUT hard to get to at night since the M train tends to stop running there past a certain hour. Since I work late, that neighborhood is out of the question for me!

Forest Hills is great lots of stuff to do and easy access to commute. Cons would be the high rent and terrible parking situation.
We live in Fresh Meadows which is about a train stop away from Forest Hills, quiet area near St. Johns University and very safe as well not much going on though compared to Forest Hills but nice area to live in as well.

I have lived in Forest Hills for over 10 years and I love it there. Parking does suck, so you should try and get a place that has a garage. There are so many great restaurants, transportation into the city is a breeze and you are close to all the major highways to get to LI easily. I have always found it to be a pretty safe area.
