NWR generally saving money

NWR generally saving money

I'm sure we're all watching our money between paying for our weddings and this recession. I'd love to hear any tips! I just reduced my Netflix membership (I'm not ready to cancel it completely) and I called our cable company and threatened to switch - getting them to lower my bill by $10 for 13 months! I'd love to hear what everyone else is doing.

Just putting as much as I can away. I just paid off a HUGE debt that I had so it will be easier for me to put $ away. I'd say consolidate and maybe lower cell phone bill. Will power when shopping!

FH and I have been saving well in the last year without sarificing too much (aka, I definetely spurgle on myself when I get the itch and likely much more than I should). Here are a few things we are doing:

- We replaced our twice a year expensive vacations with one modest vacation this year.
- We eat out less and when we do eat out we eat out cheaper (local places in Queens versus eating in trendy Manhattan restaurants).
- We now live together and share a car.
- We cancelled a few of our premium cable channels.
- We switched our $ to a high yield account.

I am sure there is more but I can't think of it now.

You need to be strict with yourself if you are a shopaholic!

here are some of the things we've done to save:

car pooling
nixing take-out (home-made lunches & dinners)
automatic deductions from my paycheck into my savings account
inviting friends over for drinks rather than going to a bar
scaled back our cablevision package
saved $ on car insurance by combining our policies
buying what we can in bulk @ costo (paper towels, meats, etc.)

oh, you know what else we did? for christmas we asked for 'fun-box' deposits. we have a box with a bunch of gift certificates in it for fun things to do on the weekends (restaurants, barnes & noble, the movies, etc.) it's def cut down on the money we spend on going out.

We all work hard & we all want things. But if you are in a situation that requires some penny pinching then i suggest the same as most of these girls.

Lower cablevision package
or
Change providers for better rates.
Lower you Cell phone package
or if you have a landline phone get rid of it & opt for just the cells.
Bring lunches rather thenbuying
Eat home more often.

When going out find things that arefree. Like in Long Beach they have concerts on the beach or Jones Beach has free movie nights outside.

Cut down on theater & start renting at Blockbuster or if you are savvy enough & have phazeD you can copy movies legally. New ones!!! For less.

Stop downloading itunes music i know its only .99cents each but it adds up after 30 downloads!

If you eat out choose places with specials going on.

USE COUPONS when shopping. The store card they give only gives their special not the manufacturers discount. COUPON CUT!

Start walking or riding bikes more then driving everywhere thats close enough. Carpool andor share your car with FH if possible.

Thats all for now.

We cut out the vacations BIG TIME. No more fancy splurging on all of our vacations.

Eat out less.

I try to bring in my lunch as much as possible.

Way less shopping for me.

Staying away from Sephora and Duane Reade as much as I can.

Use any discount or coupons I can get.

aside from cutting back on things like vacations and things.. my ING account is my saving grace

i have it set up so it taked X amount of dollars out every week.. its a good enough to make a difference.. but not enough to even really notice

the IMG is a higher yeilding acct.. although its no where near what it used to be :(

we have cut back on going out anywhere really... that $$ really saves up, we hardly ever eat out, we only took one vacation this year instead of a few, we have a joint account, I tend to walk to alot of places instead of driving, and we actually save all our spare change in big cups to cash in when full at Commerce.... FH makes tips at this job and the extra coins really add up quick!

Trying not to impulse buy like clothing and stuff...sticking to my food shopping list and not buying things I don't need.....canceling gym membership and working out at home

Re: NWR generally saving money

I have a whole bunch of tips.

First and formost, if anyone has a 401K and invested agressively, I suggest making most of your portfolio conservative and putting most of your funds as fixed. This has helped prevent any losses in my 401K- a great way to save!

I ALWAYS put the same amount of money away everytime I get paid. I budget my money with whatever I have left after stashing it into savings.

Saving change. If you spend with cash, stash all your change in a jar. I always do this and never pay with change. Whatever change I get back goes in my little jar. I can accumulate about $80 a month!

Cut up credit cards! I don't have any. Even though I am good with money, I never owned one of these bad boys. I have built credit by getting carloans, cellphones, even debit cards. I pay everything with cash. That way there are no surprises that I 'owe' any money.

Stop going out to dinner. This is the number 1 reason why people spend a lot of money. Limit going out to eat to once a month. When you go, avoid appetizers and liquor- that saves a lot of money. Or order appetizers as entrees.

Brown bag your lunch! I make my lunches here at work. Very rarely I order lunch- that's like once every other month! I stopped buying the 2 dollar cup of coffees. I buy my own at the supermarket and make it everyday.

I stopped going out to lunch. This wastes a lot of gas. I only go out once a week to Target just to walk around. Instead, I go to the gym in my complex and work out or I talk a walk outside.

I know I should stop going out to dinner. That's where I spend so much money. But I want to go out and I always feel like life's too short, why shouldn't I do what I want..and that extends to everything, not just eating out? But that's obviously why I am broke.
