NWR: Getting a kitten tonight!! A few questions...
Original post by CaMacho
I figured you girls may be able to help. We're getting a kitten tonight that is about 8 weeks old. YAY! She has been living outside with the mother, but the woman we are getting her from has been able to hold her, play with her, etc... So when we pick her up, should we take her right to the vet?? How old do they have to be to get spayed (sp?) and declawed? TIA!!!
I'll post pics when we get her.

we got ours at 8 weeks. we have to neuter him at 6 months. the vet wouldnt neuter him until he was 6 months
he need a round of shots. He needs 3 rounds of shots. He got his first round of shots at 8 weeks. Then he is getting the rest of his shots when he gets neutered

Congrats! I recommend taking the kitty right to the vet especially if you have any other animals and since she has been staying outside ( fleas, ticks, ect...). Spaying and neutering usually occurs around 3 months. Any questions you can Fm me. Good luck!

Re: NWR: Getting a kitten tonight!! A few questions...
i also hear declawing is now illegal... im not sure if theres any truth to that but i thought id mention it anyway
i have six cats- all have nails and i trim them every 2 weeks or so... just a thought....
I think the kitten may be old enough to be spayed as well
i would also try and get an appointment with a vet right away- north shore is good bc they accept walk ins and they are pretty reasonable in price my best friend works there so FM me if you need any info!
good luck!! and def post pics!!!!
Here are some name ideas:
Isis (thats what we named my cat), Angel, Cocoa, my sister liked Chanel (lol) a lot of people tell me they named their cats Athena (lol go figure!) Sassy Nala

Thanks girls!! We're getting her tomorrow and have a vet appointment for 8pm with the animal hospital in rvc. We went out and bought a scratching post, kitten food, treats, litter, litter box and catnip toys.
As for names we're thinking Chica or Sassy. Guess we'll have to take her home and see what we start calling her. We are SO excited!

I think with the spaying/neutering they like for the animal to go into heat once before they do it...which is why I think 6 months is tossed around...i just remember that being a requirement with my mom's himaylayan.
good luck.

Target has GREAT stuff on line for cats...check it out. Those names are GREAT!!! If you decide to keep her nails and she starts scratching then Sassy would fit her . I had many cats and had them declawed...and had no problems w/them. I think ultimately it's your decision..because later down the road when children come into play you do not want the cat to scratch them. However if you decide not to declaw, you can always take her to get the nails cut if she doesn't allow you to do it. Congrats on the addition to the family I can see it now Chica Camacho or Sassy Camacho..how CUTE!!!!

please please please don't get her declawed!!!
it's so painful for the cat and is the equivalent of cutting our fingers off at the knuckle--it's NOT just their nails you're taking out!
just trim the nails every few weeks--it's easy to do.
I've had cats all my life and they have always been declawed and everyone I know has cats that are declawed. I've never heard anyone say NOT to. But, now I guess i'll have to think about that...
Don't declaw... make sure there is a scratching post in the family room and not hidden somewhere and you will be fine... you can get nail caps worse case... their claws are their only defense if they need! I have always had cats and never declawed.. no problems at all! Acually most cat breeders will make you sign a contract that you will NOT declaw the kitten.. although this sounds like a stray litter... i still would not declaw!

I have a 7 month old kitten and his name is Leo. He's been a great addition to our little family so congratulations! We adopted him from a pet store at 8 weeks old and took him to the vet the same week we got him for shots, tests etc. You have to go back a couple of times for the additional shots. We got him spayed at about 5 months. We made the decision not to declaw but we are very lucky - he doesn't scratch anything!

just wanted to add, I did not know all this about declawing the cat but when my parents declawed my cats, they only did their front claws so they could still defend themselves with their back claws if need be...just wanted to mention that. Good luck with your new kitten...I like Sassy

Just as an aside, someone said something about only removing front claws and the cat still being able to defend itself with back claws - that doesn't sound like much defense to me. The front paws would be used for defense - how is a cat going to defend itself with its back claws?

Have you seen cats fight? Most if the time I see my cats play fight they are on their back kicking with their back claws. Like I said, my parents has my cats declawed and they lived a wonderful happy life, they were indoor cats and were treated wonderfully. I guess if I had an outdoor cat, it would be more of an issue. I do not want to make this into a huge debate, I realize that I did not know the process of declawing when I was growing up, I thought since my cats were declawed, that was the norm.

so after reading that, if I had a cat of my own, it would not be declawed. That sounds barbaric.....
