I have a friend who is having a surprise birthday party (they don't know obviously) but I don't know what to give as a gift.
Its a catered party at a restaurant. Her DH is going all out.
If you voted you can also give me specific suggestions.

man or woman??? woman i'd say GC to macys, man i'd say GC to a steakhouse...UNLESS hes a sports person then maybe to dicks or sports authority

I always like a restaurant certificate, because its giving people an experience somewhere. Sometimes tangible 'things' end up being a waste, a restaurant certificate they could get a botle of wine and nice atmosphere...

I dont like giving GC's, not that its wrong but when i give a gift i dont give GC's. Unless you know its for something they really want like for a spa. I have given my mom a GC for a massage but thats bc she had said she really wanted one and she is a person who never wants other things.
Usually i give a personal gift and get something i know they would love or have said they wanted
