nwr: girls on synthroid

has your doctor ever told you that it may effect fertility???

I have been on the lowest dose for almost 2 years. I just got a call from the doctor that the levels were not where they should be when i went for my 3 month bloodwork so they want to increase the dose. She said they are reluctant to increase the dose because it effect fertility and can cause osteoporosis. but they didnt give me a choice...i have to increase it. has anyone else heard of this? I knew once i was diagnosed with hypothyroidism that i would be on the meds for life but she never mentioned that before and now it has me worried

I've never heard about it affecting fertinility... but I know that if your thyroid is not working, and it's not treated, THAT can affect your fertility.

Lots of people have hypothyroidism and treat it with Synthroid, I wouldn't worry too much about the fertility issue.

What they are saying is if they give you too much, it can affect your fertility ONLY while on them bc it affects your ovulation.

I was HYPERthyroid for years and with medication and then eventual radiation it is now under control w/o meds (at least for now) and while it was HYPER they were concerned for fertility bc you don't ovulate while it's out of whack and it also affects how your body absorbs calcium (which is where the osteo comes in).

Don't worry - any fertility effect will return to normal once your thyroid function is normal. But they do have to play with the dosage every so often and adjust it. If you doctor has confused you, maybe you should go and speak with them and let them know your concerns. And if they don't seem to care (which some docs are just A-Holes like that) I have an endo who I LOVE I can recommend.

I just looked it up in my PDR, and the osteoporosis ('decreased bone mineral density') is listed as an adverse reaction but says nothing about affecting fertility; it does states 'not for treatment of obesity or infertility' in the 'precaution' section
