NWR: Girls that get coldsores

Original post by tann22

Hi, Please post your remedies.
Nothing seems to work for me

I'm so afraid I'm going to wake up with
one on my wedding day.

Does anyone use makeup to cover it up? Any brand in particular? Or does that make it worse?

Blistex in the white tube helps prevent them, but in case you wake up with one use Denavir its by prescription but it wors, it shortens healing time.

Also they say drink plenty of water and keep your lips hydrated to prevent them.

ETA: stress is one of the causing factors so relax.

I've learned that a great way for me to avoid getting them altogether, is to make sure my lips are lubricated all the time. I always put on chapstick throughout the day and ALWAYS before I go to bed.

I also do the same and take Valtrex when I feel a break out starting. Before my wedding I just might take one pill every day before the wedding.

This works wonders, but sometimes it's just hormonal. I ALWAYS get one the first day of my period. Never fails!

Me too! Always around when aunt flo comes to visit! I am so worried that I will get it the morning of my wedding!

Re: NWR: Girls that get coldsores

Ive tried Abreva and it worked for a while but then seemed to lose effectiveness.

Ive tried L-Lysine, eh.

Im now using Zilactin AS SOON as I feel one coming on and its been good so far.
Ive heard Herpacin works well.

Also, Ive heard of dipping a qtip in bleach and applying it once the blister is formed. you obviously need to be very careful doing this, but Ive heard it gets rid of the blister and dries the sore, but it still has to heal, which takes a few days.

I think with any remedy, the key is to apply it as soon as you feel any symptoms. I carry Zilactin in my purse with me all the time, just for this reason.

Re: NWR: Girls that get coldsores

I used to get cold sores all the time...until about 2 years ago. I spoke with my doctor who prescribed Valtrex. It has worked wonders, but you have to follow the doctor's guidelines exactly. For example, as soon as you feel a 'tingle' (even though you may not see it yet) you take the first one. Then you take another a certain amount later, and continue to take them until it is completely gone. If you take it early enough when you feel the tingle, it won't come out (at least in my experience). I keep the pills with me so I can take it ASAP wherever I am. I also apply Abreva too when I feel one coming.

Also, I've heard about keeping your lips lubricated at all times helps. Since I started using chapstick 24/7 (I use the black original ChapStick and keep one everywhere) I've noticed a big improvement.

Hope this helps! Sorry for the long answer but from someone who used to get them constantly I finally feel like I found something that works!!!!

sadly enough this made me smile...unfortunately i've gotten them since i was young. I've tried everything!!! If you are afraid of getting one on your wedding day ask your doctor for a prescription of Valtrex. Remeber its a virus so you shouls take the medicine prior to getting the tingling feeling, you want to avoid waiting for it to pop up.

If you do get one take the valtrex and use Zovirax prescription creme.

I'm glad to see that we are all in the same boat I get them often, for years now and the ONLY thing that works for me is Zovirax -which is a prescription! I always drink lots of water, and I must keep my lips hydrated..but this DOESN'T stop them
All I really care about at this point is the day of the wedding Good luck girls..

This is so true! I take Valtrex too when I get cold sores, like you said in order for you to completely avoid the blister from coming out you HAVE to take the first pill the MINUTE you feel the first tingle..if the sore is already out it is too late. This is actually in the prescribing info for the drug. I just got over a cold sore that I had woken up with and took the pills anyway, it was gone in 2 days. I would ask for a prescription and just take it for a few days before the wedding just to be on the safe side, that would also prevent them from coming out. Lysine-L also works pretty well, it cuts healing time, but you still break out in the blister. I used to use the zovirax cream, but it didnt work too well, and I read somewhere that studies have shown that it doesnt really speed healing time or prevent the blister from getting bigger.

Re: NWR: Girls that get coldsores

Ditto! I suffered for cold sores for many years, then during a visit to my dermatologist, I asked him about it. So he gave me a prescription for the Valtrex. It really does work wonders, but like everyone has said, you have to take it at the first tingle. I know I'm going to be stressed out before the wedding, so I'll be sure to have a prescription on hand.

Re: NWR: Girls that get coldsores

lysine... (vitamin sold at CVS) and Valtrex perscription from a doc... my dermatologist perscribes it for me.. there is no way to stop it really but first sign start taking both..... google Lysine.. apparently it has some quality that reverses the effect of the virus itself...

that's my plan.. I've thought about it myself.. I got a big one on my lip for Thanksgiving... I was like 'thanks for my lip' at the table.. it was funny!!!! BUT it won't be that day!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Re: NWR: Girls that get coldsores

I have gotten them for years to the point that I have had like 5 at one time! I started to get them more frequently about a month and a half ago (stress related), so I have been taking Valtrex every day to prevent me having any the day of the wedding. So far so good. I carry it with me at all times, in addition to Zovirax cream. I take L-Lysene every day and make sure I drink plenty of water.

Re: NWR: Girls that get coldsores

my doctor prescribed me valtrex for my cold sore. eekkkk - i was so embrassed when i filled the prescprition!

I have heard that using under eye concealer (the green stuff) is a good trick for hiding cold sores. It takes out the red and covers it up a bit. Hope this helps!

Re: NWR: Girls that get coldsores

advice from an experienced cold sore girl......

I get them on the base of my nostrils, not my lips but I think the treatment would be the same.

Lysine, taken daily will prevent most outbreaks. I usually get the coldsores when I have forgotten abou the Lysine for a while.

I have a prescription cream that cuts down the time and the pain.

I've used Abbreva. It is almost as good as the presctiption creme.

Nothing else has been particularly helpful. I was once given a prescrition pill to take for a few days. I got the runs so bad!!
