NWR: Has anyone trained for a Triathalon before?

My husband and I are interested in training for one that's in September. We are planning on getting bikes this weekend, but other than that, not sure where to start..........any suggestions?

I haven't trained for a triathalon before, but maybe you can start by checking out the Iron Man/Woman websites--they might have some useful tips for you to get started.

FH is going to start training for triathalons too. He's a Marine, so he's always working out...I'll ask him for some tips.

I've run several triathalon's before. Usually the hardest part for people is the swim since most people are not good swimmers. If that is not the case with you, then you need to get into great cardio shape...

What length are you doing? Sprint, olympic or iron? FM me if you want some tips!

I've tried many times to get my FW into triathalons but she's not interested kudos to you guys for giving one a try!

I have. You really should do a sprint distance tri before a full (olympic) tri... and if you can't afford to work with a trainer, start reading up a lot. You especially need to prepare yourself for 'brick' training (bike + run = ick) and other transition training.

I wouldn't set your sights on a full distance tri until you've done a sprint distance. If September's race is a full tri, try to attempt a sprint distance this summer.

Also, if you're going from doing no running / biking / swimming to trying to do a full tri in 4 months, you likely don't have enough time to train safely. I'd aim for a sprint distance by the end of the summer / September and then see where you are in your training.

If you are big runners or something, then it's possible you could get ready... but training for a full distance is tough in only a few months. I'm not at all trying to discourage you (I think it's great you want to do it!) - I just want people to train safely and not get injured.

I reinjured my back (broke it 4 years ago) and knees through poor tri training -- only now getting back into shape.

GOOD LUCK!

ETA - I agree that swimming is usually the hardest for most people. (Ironically, it was the easiest for me b/c I was always a swimmer...) I would also attempt to do some open water (not pool) swims before the event. Swimming 1 mile in open water is VERY different from swimming 1 mile in a pool where you turn around and push off every 25 - 50 yards.

There are usually a couple of training camps on LI during the summer for transition training and open water swims. Do some googling and I'm sure you'll come across it.

Another idea I would highly recommend would be to not go it alone -- train with Team in Training. You'll get professional training for free, work with a large group, and raise money for a great cause. I work with someone who has done 2 or 3 tries for TnT. Great experience!!!
